Ever since I was little, I have loved small spaces. My tree house in my backyard was the birthplace for many an adventure, whether that was being a princess in a tower with a fierce dragon below to ward off unwanted suitors, or reinacting little house on the prairie and pretending to do my laundry with a wash board, I was always happiest when my possessions were few and my space manageable. My dreams since then have evolved into something a little more detailed. I first discovered tiny houses about two years ago. I was watching Youtube videos, and I came across a man who had built a house in the side of a mountain using only reclaimed materials. This led to a video where someone had turned a school bus into a house for his family. Then that led to the icing on the cake, tiny houses. I was in love. Tiny houses captured all of my great loves: the ability to travel wherever the open road called me to, the minimalism that the daughter of a hoarder craved, the freedom to personalize my house to my tastes without having to break the bank, and the ability to make it eco friendly and self sustainable. I knew that I would want my tiny house to have Solar panels, being that my electronic needs were few. I also knew that I would want to have a composting toilet, because one of my passions is maintaining water cleanliness around the world. I have a huge green thumb, so I wanted to incorporate as many plants as possible into my design, so I allowed room on my trailer to have a greenhouse on the end, as well as many hanging plants all around to give that jungle feel. I wanted copious quantities of sunlight, so I allowed my dream to include clear roofs and huge windows. I have always wanted a Murphy bed, so I designed a way to not only put my bed away when it wasn’t in use, but also to make it asethically pleasing when it was up by having shelves cover it. I went ahead and thought to have a mini wood burning fireplace to reduce the need for electricity. All of my appliances were either low electricity or gas powered in my dream, and the lights I did have leaned towards salt lamps. I wanted a salt lamp garden, to give that warm fairy garden feel. My bathroom was also full of lights and plants, making it feel like a spa. There would be a glass shower, because we all know shower curtains are the devils hands when your eyes are closed and hair full of shampoo. I would have a wooden slatted bench in my shower, to hold my bottles and to sit when I need to shave. All of my water I would use would be filtered through an in house reverse osmosis system, and then my gray water would be use to water plants outside. I have an old 1800s washstand, to tie in my love of little house on the prairie, and a well lit mirror, to add ambiance as well as lighting. My kitchen was just enough to bake and cook, and also dry the herbs and flowers I grew in my greenhouse. It had white granite countertops, a bit farmhouse sink, and a window with a ledge to put freshly baked pies in. I dreamed of tall ceilings so that I could hang swinging chairs, and have many shelves for books and various shells and knickknacks. So far, my tiny house dream is getting closer and closer to reality, as I have many of the materials put together and ready to build. All that is required is for me to keep perpetuating the good dream.
