Hello, Star Players!

Welcome to another edition of Free Game Friday! Today, we're talking about a concept that's more relevant than ever in our fast-paced, always-on world: Time is Money. As a new mom of twins, I've had to get serious about maximizing every spare moment I find—those fleeting pockets of time are pure gold.

The central idea behind maximizing your time comes from a concept I first learned about in grad school at Penn State (We ARE!), and it’s one of my favorite theories:

Parkinson's Law: This powerful truth states that work expands to fill the time available for its completion. Think of it like gas: it will expand to fill the container that holds it. Similarly, we often allow a task to expand to fill the time we've allotted for it. As the saying goes, “The more time you have, the more time you waste”. I’ve been covering this concept in my workshops for years because it's so important for building the confidence to ascend and fostering self-reliance.

The Connection Between Time Management and Personal Branding

Effectively managing your time isn’t just about getting things done; it's a critical component of your personal brand. When you master your time, you're communicating to the world that you are reliable and professional.

There are three key ways time management is connected to personal branding:

1) Produces Consistent and High-Quality Work: By managing your time, you ensure you have a dedicated schedule to produce your best work consistently. This consistency is a hallmark of a strong personal brand.

2) Enhances Credibility and Trust: When you consistently deliver on time and with quality, you build a reputation for being reliable and trustworthy. This is crucial for career growth and building a loyal network.

3) Creates Opportunities for Growth and Development: When you’re not wasting time, you create space for new opportunities. Whether it’s learning a new skill, taking on a challenging project, or even networking, good time management frees you up to grow professionally and personally.

Maximizing Your Time with Technology

Since I'm all about using technology to "stress less," I want to share a simple, powerful solution I’ve found:

The Pomodoro method- This method helps me maximize productivity without constantly checking the clock, turning a 30-minute nap window into a productive work session. To make it even easier, you can use a free playlist on YouTube that provides 25 minutes of relaxing study music followed by a 5-minute break with nature sounds—a perfect reward for a solid block of heads-down focus. I'm using the exact playlist linked below to draft this article right now, and it’s a game-changer.

Of course, Google offers several free tools that can help you implement this and other time management strategies. You can use:

Google Calendar to block out focused work periods, Gmail to schedule emails to send later, or even Google Keep for quick notes and to-do lists to keep your mind clear and focused on the task at hand.

Lastly, I covered using technology responsibly to be productive. I can cover more on this in an upcoming publication. Below are a few key takeaways--comment below if you'd like to see more.

Using AI Responsibly to Achieve Success

Beyond simple productivity tools, AI can be a powerful partner in managing your time and elevating your personal brand. I recently led a workshop on this very topic for the I AM C.U.L.T.U.R.E.D. program, where we discussed how to use AI responsibly to achieve success.

Here are five key tips for using AI responsibly that we covered:

1) Be aware of AI’s limitations: AI is a powerful tool, but it's not perfect. It can make mistakes and can be biased, so it's important to be aware of these limitations and use it responsibly.

2) Use AI for good: AI can be used for many purposes, both positive and negative. Always strive to use it to benefit yourself and others, and avoid using it to cause harm.

3) Protect your privacy: AI systems collect and store a lot of data. Be mindful of how your data is being used and take steps to protect your privacy.

4) Be critical of AI-generated content: AI can create realistic-looking text, images, and videos. It's important to be critical of this content and to not believe everything you see online.

5) Talk to others about AI: AI is a complex topic. Discussing it with others will help you learn more about it and use it responsibly.

In the workshop, we even used tools like Google Bard to map out a "Global Change Agent Journey," where students brainstormed specific goals, timelines, and resources needed to solve global issues. You can use AI to help you achieve success, generate new ideas, and solve problems creatively in your own life.

I hope this helps you wind down the last few sweet weeks of summer. If you’re interested in having me speak to your team or group about time management, Parkinson's Law, and the Pomodoro method, please shoot me an email ([email protected]) and check out our workshop one-sheeter.

All my best,
