The Little Candle That Didn’t Give Up

The Little Candle

By Hamid Hussain ShahPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

In a quiet little village nestled between green hills, there lived a small candle named Lumi. Lumi wasn’t like the tall, colorful candles sold in fancy shops.

She was short, plain white, and a bit uneven. Some of the other candles in the shop teased her.

“You’re too small to light up anything important!” laughed Ruby, a tall red candle.

“I heard the big house on the hill only buys tall candles for their grand dinners,” said Goldie, the golden scented candle.

Lumi listened to them, but she didn’t let their words melt her spirit.

Every night, when the shop closed and the lights went out, Lumi would whisper to herself, “I may be small, but I can still shine.”

The Day Everything Changed

One day, dark clouds gathered over the village. A storm came, and heavy winds blew through the trees. Lightning cracked the sky, and soon, the whole village lost power. No lights, no phones, no internet — everything was dark.

People panicked. Children cried, elders stumbled, and homes became shadows.

Mr. Hamid, the owner of the candle shop, rushed in with a flashlight. He lit a few candles to give the shop some light.

Ruby and Goldie were picked first, of course. But soon, all the bigger candles were used.

Then Mr. Hamid’s flashlight battery died. He needed just one more candle for his own home. He looked around — only Lumi was left.

“She’s small,” he mumbled, “but maybe she’ll help.”

He picked Lumi up, lit her, and gently walked home.

Lighting the Way

As soon as Lumi was lit, her soft flame danced with joy. She didn’t burn too fast, and she didn’t flicker out like others. She was steady and calm.

When Mr. Hamid reached home, his little daughter was scared of the dark.

“It’s okay, Amna,” he said, placing Lumi on the table. “Look, this little candle is here with us.”

Amna looked at Lumi and smiled. “She’s beautiful.”

Lumi stood proud. Her small flame gave enough light for the whole room. Amna played, read a story, and even had dinner with her family — all under Lumi’s light.

That night, Lumi wasn’t just a candle. She was hope.

The Word Spreads

The next morning, the storm had passed, but the electricity still hadn’t come back. People began to look for candles. Mr. Hamid told everyone about the little candle that lasted the whole night.

“She may be small,” he said, “but she lights longer and steadier than the rest.”

Soon, people from all over the village came to see Lumi. Some even wanted to buy candles just like her. Ruby and Goldie watched in silence as Lumi became the shop’s most requested candle.

But Lumi didn’t let fame change her. She still whispered to herself every night, “I may be small, but I can still shine.”

A Visit From The Mayor

Three days later, the village was still without power. The mayor came to visit Mr. Hamid’s shop.

“I’ve heard about this small candle of yours,” the mayor said.

Mr. Hamid smiled and handed Lumi to him. That night, Lumi lit up the mayor’s home. He was so impressed that he made an announcement:

“From today, we’ll keep Lumi as a symbol of strength and light in our town. She reminds us that even the smallest among us can bring the brightest hope.”

They even built a small statue in the town square — not of a person, but of a candle, with a quote underneath:

“Never doubt your light, no matter how small you are.”

The Lesson

Lumi never became taller. She never changed colors or had fancy scents like others. But what she had was more powerful — she believed in herself.

In life, we often think we’re too small, too simple, or not special enough to make a difference. But like Lumi, we all have a light inside us. When we choose to shine — even in dark times — we become the hope others need.

So whenever you feel too small to matter, remember Lumi. And whisper to yourself:

“I may be small, but I can still shine.”

Moral Of The Story:

Don’t judge yourself by size, looks, or what others say. What matters is your heart, your purpose, and your belief in yourself. Even a tiny candle can light up a whole room of darkness.
