It's one thing to get fired up and come out guns a-blazing.

And it's quite another to realize that blazing guns doesn't necessarily net you clients.

The realization is that it doesn't matter how cool your offer, product, or service is because if you don't have clients, who cares. And that's why marketing is so dang crucial.

The myth of "build it and they will come" is just that.

A myth.

Understanding marketing is essential to your success as a new freelancer. Marketing is how your perfect client finds you. Without marketing, you won't gain the exposure to grow a sustainable brand or business.

Marketing is how you gain the trust of your target audience by showing, telling, and proving that your products, services, or offers are there to help the pain they're going through.

The following are six marketing tips every new freelancer needs to get started right.

Focus on building relationships first

Before you sell to your tribe immediately, learn to build a strong relationship.

This is possible by sharing valuable content through videos, opt-ins, or an email campaign. In other words, the freer value you provide in the long run, the stronger the relationship becomes -- making it easier to market your products later.

After all, you wouldn't ask a first date for a hand in marriage, right?

So take the time and build that know>>like>>trust.

Share engaging and valuable content that matters

No businesses today, online or off, can survive without content marketing.

Without content, your audience will not understand the type of value you provide. This can be done through blog posts, videos, pictures, or even sharing user-generated content. More poignantly is to use already existing platforms. Things like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

And remember, it's not about what's cool and matters to you.

It's about what matters to them.

Don't skip email marketing

What would happen if you put all your eggs in the social media basket and then woke up to find your account shut down?

Yeah, it kinda makes you pucker a bit, right?

This is why email lists and email marketing are so critical and often underutilized.

Emails offer the highest return on investment compared to other online marketing strategies. There is a myth that email marketing is dead, but this is far from the truth, with nearly three hundred billion emails being sent worldwide today. If your customer doesn't have social media yet, they have email.

Email marketing is powerful because it is a private and intimate conversation -- making them likely to purchase a product from you if they really understand its value.

In my opinion, email should be the first thing any freelancer should set up well before a social media profile.

Set up a business blog

A blog or website is the only way to have sole ownership of what you share and sell to your clients.

You won't reach those customers if a specific social media platform disappears. However, you know this won't happen since you control your blog. Making it easy to get your customers or target audience whenever you can.

My mantra is to keep it simple and short.

For example, this article you're reading will probably be about 800 words and take 3-4 minutes to consume.

Use social media

You can't avoid social media, so embrace it.

Even just one social media account can skyrocket your reach and exposure as a brand.

Did you know that nearly four billion people worldwide use some form of social media? This means your potential to reach your target audience is almost limitless.

Get help

Not quite sure where to begin or how to start?

Get help.

Marketing helps you reach specific revenue goals and your target audience quickly and effectively. Without marketing, it is unlikely your customers will find you very easily. Remember, build it and they won't just magically appear.

You have to let them know you're open for business.

The final word

Freelancing can be a great way to make excellent side-hustle money, but it can also be challenging if you don't have the right marketing skills.

The six tips we've provided in this article will help you get started on the right foot and increase your chances of success as a freelancer. Remember to focus on building relationships first, providing valuable content that matters to your target audience, and utilizing email marketing and social media to reach the most people.

You can make a great living as a freelancer with a little effort and the right strategy. So get out there and start hustling, baby!
