Plant-Powered Protein Delights in Pakistan's Capital

A Vegetarian’s Guide to Islamabad's Restaurants

By Alizey IqbalPublished 10 months ago 4 min read

Craving delicious, protein-packed food without the meat? Islamabad’s (finally…) got your back! In the last few years, restauranteurs here have (finally!) started offering better options for those who don’t / can’t / won’t eat meat!

Here's a quick rundown of my favourite spots for vegetarian protein powerhouses:

Eastern Options

• Sunny Kitchen – Blue Area - F6 side

Feeling fancy? Located in Blue Area, Sunny Kitchen’s vegetarian menu is a treat. They have many dishes that constitute their veggie menu. Plus, they can sub tofu for chicken in many dishes - hello, protein paradise!

Make sure you book in advance as the space is small and don’t miss out on the seasonal dishes such as the papaya salad! And they have now opened in Lahore as well!

Sesame & Soy – Blue Area - F7 side

Located below the Hotel 108, and Loafology in Blue Area, this new addition to the Asian food scene is the brain child of Nicole, the owner of Loafology.

Hot Pot magic alert! Sesame & Soy has a variety of vegetarian dishes that'll tantalize your taste buds. They’ve also designed a special vegetarian menu. Get ready for a protein punch!

• Lang Zhou – F7

Feeling adventurous? Lang Zhou's is one of the many Chinese restaurant that offer a whole range of different types of tofus. Don't forget to explore their veggie dim sum too! A raving review here: https://images.dawn.com/news/1191800

Western Options

• Sante – F6 – Beverly Center

Sante has a selection of wraps, crepes and dips that are vegetarian and protein-rich too.

Arz Lebanon – F7 Markaz

Mezze madness! Arz Lebanon's mezze platters are bursting with protein-rich dips and veggies. Perfect for sharing (or not, we won't judge).

My favourite are their muttabal, their hummus and their falafel! Obviously, your non-vegetarian friends will also have tons of choice with many meaty options.

And yes, Lebanon is actually west of here, so definitely a Western option! ;)

Fuoco – F6 Markaz

Craving a juicy burger fix?

Fuoco's Beyond Meat Veggie burger is a game-changer. Plus, most of their Italian dishes are veggie-friendly and oh-so-satisfying. My favourites are the mushroom risotto, the spinach soup and the margarita pizza!

• Loafology – Blue Area - F7 side

Calling all burger fans! Loafology's veggie burger (don’t forget to ask for the special kimchi mayo) is a classic for a reason. It's filling, flavorful, and perfect for a casual hangout.

Being a bakery, Loafology also offer many snacks and patisseries that are vegetarian, and they’ve got amazing coffees as well.

District 6 & Cafe Flow - F6

Quinoa cravings? These cafes have your back! Their quinoa salads are packed with protein, veggies, and flavor and they’ve got several other plentiful salads (less protein packed, but just as good!) Perfect for a healthy lunch on the go. They also have some amazing coffees, don’t miss the pistachio latte at Café Flow!

Cafe Flow

Desi Options

So, if all the above all looked to fancy, to foreign or simply too expensive, here are additional delicious option that won’t break the bank!

Chattha’s – F10 – Khusheed Market

You feel like having desi food but want to avoid mutton and other chickens? Try the great paneer options offered at Chattha’s in F10, st 14, Kusheed Market. “Paneer” is a kind of cottage cheese, which doesn’t have much taste but has bite and is a nice protein addition.

At Chattha’s, they have palak paneer (a creamy spinach sauce with cubes of paneer), but also paneer tikkas (which are skewered big pieces of cheese, sandwiched in between tomatoes and peppers, to dip in a sauce) and the best is paneer reshmi, which is flavourful curry with pieces of cheese and veggies. All these will fill you up and won’t leave you hungry like other light veggie/side options sometimes do.

And if you are looking for a very hygienic Desi breakfast, with halwa puri and channay (vegetarians love breakfast!!), then Chattha’s is the best place one can find! Don’t miss their lassi!

Hyderabadi Chatkhara – F10 Markaz

This is located in F10 Markaz, facing Cheezious. This is a tiny place, not fancy at all, closer to street food, but I have NEVER been sick from eating there and they have, hands down, the best papri chaat in town! The imli sauce and the yogurt are super fresh, the channay and the potatoes are always cooked to perfection and they are my go-to protein snack if I don’t have time to cook! They also have dahi bale and other chaats to try from.

Khokha Khola – F6 – Beverly Center

Khokha Khola used to have a whole “vegetarian section” in their menu, and even though the section isn’t there any more, the dishes still are. Try their “Truck Driver Daal”, their “Dhaba ki Dhal Makhni” and their “Good Ol Palak Paneer” for a taster of non-meaty, but protein rich, Pakistani specialties.

Table Talk – F6 – Khosar Market

If you’re looking for fancier desi options, you’ve got to try the vegetable Thali at the Table Talk, as well as their paneer tikka. They also have non-desi food such as risottos and pastas that are vegetarian as well.

Remember, this is just a starting point! Explore, experiment, and discover your own veggie protein havens in Islamabad. Happy eating!
