This Indian Himalayan state is a dream for anyone who loves hiking, whether you’re a first-time backpacker, an experienced mountaineer, or an adventure lover who craves high-altitude thrill.
I’ve spent a good chunk of my hiking life exploring best trails in Himachal, and let me tell you, there’s something magical about the air, the people, and the raw nature that keeps pulling you back. If you're someone who dares to chase the thrill beyond ordinary travel, or someone who just needs a quiet place to reconnect with yourself, landscapes of Himachal will not disappoint.
In this guide, I’m sharing my Top 5 Best Hiking or Trekking Destinations in Himachal Pradesh, places I’ve hiked, fallen in love with, and still dream about. This isn’t a list of “the most popular” or “easiest” treks in Himachal. It’s a collection of trails that touched me deeply, challenged me, and gave me stories to tell for life.
1. Rupin Pass Trek: A Journey Through Ever-Changing Landscapes

Let me start with the one that changed everything for me, Rupin Pass. If you’re someone who appreciates diversity on a trek, this is going to blow your mind. The route takes you from the state of Uttarakhand into Himachal Pradesh, and along the way, it throws every type of terrain at you, hanging villages, dense pine forests, roaring rivers, lush meadows, snow bridges, waterfalls, and finally a massive snow-covered pass that stands over 15,000 feet.
I’ll never forget how the trail made me feel small and powerful at the same time. One moment you’re walking through a remote village like Jakha where locals greet you with smiles, and the next, you’re scaling steep snow walls just below the pass, panting but smiling like crazy.
If you're a backpacker looking for a trek that challenges you physically and blesses you with changing scenery every few hours, Rupin Pass is for you. And trust me, once you stand at the pass and look down at the other side, vast, untouched, and wild, it’ll stir something inside you. It’s for hikers who want to feel like they’ve walked through different worlds in just one trail.
And yes, you’ll earn every step. It’s not an easy trek. But that’s exactly why it’s unforgettable.
2. Hampta Pass: A Weekend Gateway into Another Planet

Next up is one of my all-time favorites, the Hampta Pass trek. It covers a total distance of 28 kilometers and takes 4 days to complete the entire circuit, it start from Jobra and ending at Chhatru via Chandratal Lake. I’ve already written an entire story about my weekend journey to Hampta Pass, but even that felt like it only scratched the surface.
Here’s why I recommend Hampta Pass: it gives you the full Himalayan experience, forest trails, river crossings, alpine meadows, and a dramatic snowy pass, all in just 4 to 5 days. For beginner hikers, or anyone looking for a short but powerful escape, Hampta Pass is perfect.
What I love about it is how the landscape changes so drastically. You start in the green, floral valleys of Kullu, and once you cross the pass, you land into the stark, desert-like terrain of Lahaul. It feels like crossing into another planet.
And just when you think the adventure is over, the trek gifts you a final jewel, Chandratal Lake. Nestled in the Spiti region at about 14,000 feet, this crescent-shaped glacial lake is something out of a dream. The turquoise blue waters reflecting the surrounding barren mountains create a surreal scene you’ll remember for life. The first time I saw it, I literally stood still for a few minutes, it didn’t look real. I don’t care how many lakes you’ve seen before; this one will leave you speechless.

Reaching Chandratal often feels like the reward for all the effort — it’s the kind of view that justifies every sore muscle and every early morning wake-up. If you’re lucky and the weather cooperates, you can even camp nearby under a night sky filled with stars. It’s the perfect ending to a trek that already gives you so much.
If you're a nature lover who wants to taste the thrill of high-altitude trekking without giving up your whole month or breaking your body, this trail is your friend. I met so many kinds of people on this trek, solo travelers chasing solitude, couples bonding over their first hike, and hardcore hikers coming back for round two. And the unspoken bond that forms at Chandratal, as everyone silently stares at that calm blue water, is something you won’t forget.
3. Pin Bhabha Pass: The Wild Side of Spiti Meets the Serenity of Kinnaur

If there’s one trail that truly tests your spirit and rewards you with unreal views, it’s the Pin Bhabha Pass trek. Imagine hiking through lush green valleys of Kinnaur and crossing over to the wild, rugged landscapes of Spiti, that’s what this trek offers.
I still remember standing on the pass, surrounded by snow-covered mountains, and looking down at Spiti's moonscape terrain. It was like looking into another universe. The contrast was so sharp, it gave me goosebumps.
This trek is a hidden gem for those who want to go beyond the usual routes. It’s for adventure lovers who thrive on raw nature, cold nights, challenging trails, and untouched beauty. I met some of the most hardcore backpackers on this trail, the kind of people who carry their own tents, cook over firewood, and find joy in simplicity.
But don’t get me wrong, even if you’re not that rugged, the organized treks here are fantastic. The support teams are solid, and you’re in safe hands.
If you're the kind of hiker who likes isolation, remote trails, and powerful transitions in scenery, Pin Bhabha Pass is where you should head next. It made me feel alive in a way that city life never could.
4. Bhrigu Lake: A Short Hike to Heaven

Not every hike needs to be a test of endurance. Sometimes, you just want to walk into nature’s lap and find peace. For that, Bhrigu Lake is a beautiful choice.
Located close to Manali, this hike is perfect for weekenders or first-timers who still want that Himalayan high. But let me be honest, even as someone who’s done tougher treks, Bhrigu Lake completely won me over.
I remember starting the hike from Gulaba, with soft rolling meadows beneath my feet. As you gain altitude, the view just keeps getting better. Snow-capped peaks show up in every direction, and if you're lucky, you'll catch horses grazing in the valleys.
And then there’s the lake, Bhrigu Lake sits silently at around 14,000 feet, reflecting the sky, surrounded by silence that almost feels sacred. It’s said to be the meditation spot of Maharishi Bhrigu, and standing there, I could see why. The peace up there is next level.
What I also love about this trail is that it allows every type of hiker in. Whether you're a solo backpacker, a photography geek, a group of college friends, or even a family with hiking teens, this trek delivers joy, views, and serenity without pushing you too hard.
It’s short. It’s sweet. It’s stunning.
5. Sar Pass: The Classic Trail with a Dreamy Twist

If you’re into classic mountain trekking, with forests, meadows, campsites under the stars, and a bit of snow sliding, Sar Pass is a must-do.
This was actually one of my earliest treks in Himachal, and it set the bar high. Starting from Kasol, which is already a backpacker's paradise, the trail takes you through dense pine forests, lively streams, and meadows so vibrant, you’ll keep taking your phone out to click pictures, and then forget the phone because the moment is just too pure.
The ascent to Sar Pass isn’t the easiest, especially if you’re new to snow. But it’s absolutely manageable with the right mindset and group support. The top of the pass is beautiful, but what really stands out is the snow slide down after crossing the pass. It’s hands-down the most fun I’ve had on a trek.
Sar Pass is for everyone, the casual hiker who wants a fun vacation, the thrill-seeker looking for a little adrenaline, and the soul-searcher needing a break from noise. It’s well organized, beginner-friendly, and always buzzing with happy energy.
If you love community, joy, natural beauty, and a bit of a thrill, Sar Pass won’t let you down.
Final Thoughts - Why Himachal Stays in My Heart
I’ve hiked in many states, through different ranges, but Himachal Pradesh hits different. There’s a spiritual silence in the mountains, a friendly energy in the villages, and an unbeatable variety in the trails. Whether you’re into glacier crossings, peaceful lakes, snow slides, or dense green meadows, Himachal has something for you.
I’ve met solo hikers pushing their limits, couples finding new strength in each other, photographers chasing golden hour light, and backpackers on long Himalayan journeys, and all of them leave Himachal with a piece of it in their soul.
If you’ve ever thought “Maybe I’ll do a trek someday,” let that someday be now. Start with one of these. You don’t have to be super fit or rich or experienced. All you need is the will to take that first step.
And once you do, believe me, the mountains will take care of the rest.
