So many times, we neglect our needs for other obligations that require those needs to be met if we want to get the best results. One of the most crucial needs that we tend to overlook is our sleep. This year I want to share some tips on how we can change certain things around us in order to get the best rest.
1. Get as much sleep as you can
We as adults need at least 8 hours of sleep, and most of the time we struggle to get that because of obstacles in our everyday life. I'm talking about stress, work, children, and I'm pretty sure there are more. It's important we give that to ourselves. I know what you're thinking, sometimes our crazy schedules won't allow us to get a full 8 hours of rest, but let me tell you guys, it is possible. For example, if you only can get 5 hours of sleep when you go to bed at night, that is completely fine. You should wake up go about your day as usual but when you get the chance take some extra time to take a nap and get that extra 3 hours of sleep sometime in the day. We tend to work a lot better when our minds are refreshed.
2. The energy in your bedroom matters
How do you want to feel when you walk into your bedroom after a long day of work? If I'm correct, I'm guessing that you would want a sense of peace. My therapist told me that your bedroom should only be for rest and that you should not use it for anything else because that would throw the energy off balance. You wonder why you feel restless when you try to go to sleep at night? It's most likely because the energy in your room is off balance. So when I go into my room, I make sure that I use it for peace and restoration. That means if I'm not sleeping the only other activities I'm doing are reading, meditating, or watching television. You don't want to use your bedroom as an office or if you have kids as a playground. You can create other spaces around the house for that. I even try not to allow company inside my bedroom, as other peoples energy can also throw the room's energy off balance. This might seem extra, but you have to be extra when it comes to your bedroom because it is a sacred space.
3. Get the best bed and mattress possible
It's important to make sure when you sleep, you are comfortable. You want to be on a mattress that makes you feel like you're floating on a pillow. I would not recommend buying mattresses online unless they have a period where you can try them out and take it back if you do not like it. Personally, I love testing out mattresses in the stores, but even then, it takes a little time to really get a feel for if a mattress is right for your body. As far as choosing a bed, you want to make sure that the bed you choose is right for how you like to sleep. For example, I cannot get low platform beds, because I like to sleep high up. I cannot get a metal bed because sometimes when I sleep, I like to throw my pillows around and end up on the headboard. Can you imagine the migraine? Some people would rather sleep on a Queen or King bed so that they have more room if they move around a lot in your sleep. These are some of the things you want to ask yourself when purchasing a bed.
4. Keep your bedroom clean and smelling good
Last but not least, you want to make sure that you maintain a clean bedroom. This means, no eating in your room. Sorry for my popcorn and ice cream lovers who love to turn on their favorite Netflix series and hop in the bed with a good snack. This is not the place for that. It's a special feeling when you are able to go to bed at night without having to worry about crumbs laying around underneath the sheets or your bedroom smelling like a corner store. Let's save that for the dining room please. You also want to hop into bed with fresh new clothes. Do not, i repeat DO NOT go to bed with clothes that you have worn outside. I can't explain how much germs and bacteria can spread on your bed sheets from even just sitting on your bed with dirty clothes. Not to mention its bad for your skin. If you have sensitive skin like me, the slightest of germs can cause me to itch and breakout. Which brings me to my next tip, wash your sheets by themselves with laundry detergent specifically made for sensitive skin. This will also help to prevent breakouts. Also, clean your feet before you hop into bed. If you like to walk around the house barefoot, although I recommend house shoes, imagine all the dirt you're bringing into your bed. Even when it comes to socks, you should take them off or put on new ones. Really, I would take a shower before coming to bed, but we all know that's unrealistic so just try to make sure you're as clean as possible before hopping into bed.
That is my last tip, I hope you guys took something from this, and get the best rest possible.
