Life Hack Your Underwear (making it easy)
By: The ADHD Accountant – Krid
In my life it is fair to say that the condition and state of my underwear has little to no relevance to anyone else. And yes, that does include my partner. I do my own laundry. Well, she did help this time. Hers are better... And, just recently, I have devised a brilliant time saving methodology.
Step one – only buy homogenized underwear. Style and colours should be fairly consistent and good for 90% of your life. As a ‘professional’ who has to wear business and business casual attire I have white undershirts, black socks, and black pants. That's a bit of British slang.
Step two – wash them all at the same time. When buying your underwear make sure they can be all washed together. I shouldn’t have to say this, but you also need to wash them before first wearing them. You guys know who you are.
Step three – use the time saving, space saving system called bundling. I don’t know if there is an actual name but that is what I call it. You simply roll a pair of socks with a pair of underwear in an undershirt. Simple.
Why does this work? How does this save me time? Who thinks like this?! Me. And maybe some famous and successful people. There are some studies which indicate that the less routine decisions that you have to make the more you can focus on your day. See Steve Jobs jeans and black turtleneck.
Here are a few ways that this actually helps me; firstly, I can do all my underwear basket (don’t judge me) in one load. No worries about sorting or mixing loads. BAM; I can have a load in, in only 10 seconds. As I consider laundry one of my lifelong nemesis any victories, no matter how small, matter. Don’t laugh, I bet you can’t beat laundry for good either.
When my underwear load is done it all goes right on my bed for sorting. Now, I could have three or four drawers and separate everything out, fold socks into pairs, and la ti da life goes on. But my way needs only one or two drawers because a compact roll can fit in less space! And without having the need for separate drawers you can combine them all into one. Or two. Just use the big drawer on the bottom!
Every morning I don’t have to go to different places and grab this that and the other thing to carry into the bathroom (let sleeping partner’s lay). I just grab a bundle. Boom, done. No thinking, no going to and fro, come and hither. Easy.
I also go to the gym regularly. Ish. Less with covid. I used to shower there – nothing like unlimited hot water and bathroom that you don’t have to share after a workout. Laundry bundles were very easy to pack and unpack in my gym bag. Drawer -> bag -> basket ->wash -> repeat.
Still not convinced?! Do you travel? Guess what, laundry bundles are great for travel, too. One bundle per day, and already wrapped tightly to minimize space needed in your bag. Are you beginning to see? Have I convinced you yet?
It won’t surprise you at this stage then to hear that I have pretty much the same style of shirts, jeans, slacks, pants, shoes, ties, etc… then will it? Jeans go here, slacks go here, shirts go there. Long sleeves on the right, short on the left.
Perhaps at this point you may think that I am crazy. And, not like a fox. But it is easy, and it works for me. It can help with routine, and routine helps with life. And life hacks, little cheats, can help you to. Do you have some life hacks of your own? I recently heard about how some people put cereal in AFTER the milk. Other’s who brush their teeth in the shower. Maybe you’re the odd one, ‘normal’ person.
