How to Take the Perfect Angkor Wat Sunrise Photo
Tips for Photographing Angkor Wat at Sunrise

Considered the world's most breathtaking temple compound, Angkor Wat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that truly defies belief. Spread across a vast area, this iconic spiritual epicentre is spectacular to gaze upon at any hour, but especially during the magical hours of sunrise. Whether one is an amateur photographer or a professional shutterbug, here's how to document Angkor Wat at sunrise with the perfect snap.
Time the Visit
Those who are hoping to visit Angkor Wat during their tour of Cambodia must time their visit. This is especially crucial for those who wish to photograph the UNESCO World Heritage Site at sunrise, as it is nigh on impossible to get a clear shot during the rainy season. The drier months of the year, from November to the middle of April, however, are ideal for visiting and photographing this iconic monument at sunrise as the sunny conditions make it possible to spend more than a few minutes outdoors exploring the compound and trying to find the best angles without the rain getting in the way. The only downside to visiting Angkor Wat during this peak tourist season is the large crowds who will descend on the historic highlight in droves.
Stay Close to the Temple
As capturing Angkor Wat at sunrise requires one to reach the temple in the wee hours of the morning, it is beneficial to secure a base near the temple. Whether you choose FCC Angkor by Avani or any other rest in the area, make sure it is just a short drive away from this, the most revered venue among Siem Reap attractions. If you are unable to find a hotel close to Angkor Wat due to budgetary reasons or unavailability, the next best option is to stay close to Siem Reap's public transport hubs and bus stops so you can catch an early ride to the temple just before sunrise.
Buying Tickets
If you intend to visit Angkor Wat early in the morning, it is crucial to purchase your entrance tickets the day before. Long lines are likely to form outside the ticketing office if you rush to the site, which only opens its gates at 5 am anyway, so it is better to purchase your ticket beforehand and arrive just in time to enter with the first batch of visitors.
Dress Code and Other Necessities
It is necessary to sleep early the night before and make sure your breakfast meal is packed and ready to go for the next day. Everything you need for your tour of Angkor Wat must also be packed and arranged on a table so that you don't leave any necessities behind. This includes everything from your camera and tripod to warm clothing to brave the chill, a bottle of water and mosquito spray. Don't forget to select a modest or conservative outfit for your temple trip in the morning, as Cambodian authorities are very strict about tourists being appropriately dressed.
Get there Early
It is prudent to arrive before 5 am to be able to enter the enclave as soon as the gates open at the appointed hour. Depending on the location of your hotel and the distance to Angkor Wat, it may be necessary to wake up at least by 4 am. Don't be discouraged by the large number of tourists around the compound, as it is possible to get a good photo without fellow travellers ruining the shot.
Other Tips and Tricks
Watch for the reflection of Angkor Wat in the pond, as it is a great indication of the perfect hour to photograph the sun rising over the temple. Make sure you snap several different shots in case some of your photos end up having bad lighting or too much exposure. Don't stand in one spot and snap away but experiment with different angles and locations.
