How do you increase your reads on Medium?
How do you make money on Medium?
How can I get noticed as a writer on Medium?
I started writing on Medium because I like the concept of earning passive income while I go about my day. I mean, who doesn't?
Besides the money, I see so many opportunities that can be created with Medium. Here are the few:
- It looks great on your resume (you can input your Medium blog in the website's section of job applications)
- You can get gigs such as writing jobs, coaching opportunities, etc.
- You can leverage Medium's traffic and subscribers to your own courses/intellectual property
- You can leverage SEO and Mediums high domain authority so that your content always stays relevant (therefore, you continue to get paid)
- You can write content WITHOUT showing your face (who knows? You can write articles in sweatpants the entire time)
There are more opportunities than I can list, but I really wish I got started with Medium sooner. It gives you the highest return on your time - especially if you're in it for the long haul.
Now, I know that the first few weeks as you try to build your follower base to hit that 100 follower mark (insert follower article) may be a little discouraging. I can admit that I participated in the follower for follower shenanigans, but I soon realized that more followers didn't translate to more dollars.
So what drove revenue?
Reads.
Long story short, it's great to get 100 followers, but after you hit that benchmark, the real work begins.
It took me a while to decide what content I should write about. I have a lot of different interests, from online business, marketing, money/wealth management, to self-improvement, and productivity. In the beginning weeks, I wrote an article in each category and test to see what my audience landed on.
So what did I do?
I let the money talk.
#1 Write good content
Here's the thing, before you continue going down this follow for follow train in order to reach the next 100 followers, I encourage you to write content in each category that interests you.
Why do you ask?
If you're going to be driving traffic to your page with the follow for follow process, more than likely those incoming followers will read some of your content - you want to see WHICH content they land on most.
From there, you can see which content most resonates with your "new" followers, and you can start writing more in those topic areas.
For example, after looking at the above picture, you can see that the top five articles that earn money for me are in the content categories of business, mindset, and Medium insights.
So what content topics do you think I'm going to write more in?
You guessed it!

Once you've identified your content categories, it's time to drive traffic and more reads (think, more money).
Below are some practices that I do to continue to get reads
#2 Cross-Post Your Content
The main money producer is 'Reads '- therefore, you can leverage your social media outlets to your content.
You can post your article links to LinkedIn, Facebook Pages, Reddit, Quora, Facebook Groups, Email Lists, etc.
Now, you may think "Tina, that's way too much work!"
Yes, I agree with you. So I like to use a bit of automation and outsourcing to get the work done for me.
I highly encourage you to use automation tools such as IFTTT (If this, then that) and Zapier.
These are literal godsends for saving you boatloads of time.
If you want a more flushed-out "how-to article" on how I automate my cross-posting to social media platforms, highlight this sentence.
Now onto the outsourcing part. Full transparency, at the time of writing this article, I am in the midst of hiring a virtual assistant to help me with the posting elements I can't automate. I've hired team members before and feel very well experienced to inform you of my thought process.
Let's get into it.
The more manual parts of cross-posting your content to social media platforms will be posting on Quora, Reddit, and Facebook Groups.
It requires a bit of research and commenting in order to drive other people's audiences to your content.
You want to make sure that your content stays relevant to the audience you're presenting it to. For example, if I'm writing about fitness, I am going to post my article to Facebook groups, subreddits, and Quora questions that talk about fitness. Make sense?
In addition to tailoring your content to specific audiences, there are some Facebook groups that allow you to promote your articles within them:
Side note, if you're in the coaching space and you want to promote your articles in coaching FB groups, I have created a resource here that can help you here.
Email Lists
Medium has this really great tool to share your articles to your current email audience. Whether or not you have an email list, it's important that you continue to drop valuable content in their inbox. Henceforth, sending them your Medium articles makes perfect sense.
Go to your settings
Select audience development
Upload a CSV of your email list

#3 Engage with the community
---
The community here is beyond amazing. It's important to give back to the community the way that they have done so with you.
If you are one of those individuals that continue to take, but never give back, you won't see much success on the platform.
The same way that individuals read your articles and give you their 0.02 cents, reciprocate and read their articles as well. If someone comments, send a reply. If someone claps, send some claps their way as well. If someone highlights, highlight their articles too. Engagement matters, it helps the writer know that you like their content and it also boosts the article within the algorithm to help get more people reading on the article.
In short, you get what you give.
. . .
I really want to take the time to congratulate you on starting out with your Medium journey, I too am alongside you! I know getting to that first $1 may seem like a daunting task or a big milestone, but with consistency, I know you will get there. If you struggle with consistency read this.
I've laid out the steps above on what it took to get me to my first $1 within a week. In summary, it's important that you write good content that your audience wants to read - let the money talk. Second, it's important that you leverage your own platform and other people's platforms to drive traffic to your articles; if you have good content and headlines mentioned in step 1, you will have an easier time converting that traffic to reads. Finally, engage with the community, you get what you put in. Medium is truly an amazing community with amazing writers. Pay it forward.
