Waking up. Whether to go to class, work, run errands, some mix of the three, or do something else entirely, most of us need to wake up and leave our bedrooms at some point during the day.
But just because we should, doesn’t mean it’s easy. From being physically exhausted to stress clouding one’s desire to exit a sleeping area, getting out of bed isn’t necessarily always on the top of one’s mind.
Like it or not, though, there’s a good chance you still need to get up and do something for the day. Thus, this piece will cover just that.
Please note that I cannot fully guarantee that this article will ensure you will successfully wake up with little to no struggle all the time. I am not a licensed health professional. If you are experiencing any serious issues, please seek their help if possible. That being said, I hope this piece can still be of some use at the very least.
Open Your Eyes
This should hopefully be an obvious piece of advice. However, the fact of the matter is that most people cannot go around awake with their eyelids shut. Closing one’s eyelids is for sleeping, after all.
In addition, navigating one’s surroundings without either being able to view them or adaptive methods used by many blind people that have to be learnt is dangerous. One could risk bumping into objects, walls, or some combination of the two. As a result, things could break and one might end up injured.
Sure, getting physically hurt will likely wake you up. But is it really worth having a crummy morning and potentially days or weeks?
Self-Motivation
Sometimes, a little internal motivation is needed to properly escape one’s sleeping zone.
Perhaps it’s the existence of a job or school that must be tended to lest your record look bad. Maybe it’s that one meetup you promised your friend a few weeks ago or a big party you got invited to. Heck, it could be something as simple as the fact that if you don’t get up, you won’t be able to eat food to survive or sleep the next night.
These might not necessarily be pleasant events, mind you. Having a mandatory court date where missing it could result in hefty legal consequences could be a powerful motivator. Likewise, being required to fulfill an important role at a funeral (eg. officiant, pallbearer), may leave you with little good choice but to wake up and leave your room.
While it might be difficult to think clearly early in the morning, reminders to oneself about the importance of daily life can be useful when it comes to waking up.
Don’t Hit Snooze
This mainly applies if you have an alarm to keep you from oversleeping. If you don’t, feel free to skip this section.
Many alarms - digital and classic - have a snooze feature which allows them to stop ringing for a few extra minutes. It allows the owner to go back to sleep for a short period of time before being forced to awaken again.
While it may be enticing to hit the little snooze button on your device: try not to unless you absolutely can’t resist. Chances are that you’ll be tempted to attempt returning to deep sleeping again. When your alarm inevitably goes off again…your cozy process will get interrupted pretty aggressively. As a result, it could be even harder to get out of bed again.
…
Sleep is important at the end of the day. However, not everything in the world can be accomplished until one wakes up.
