How To Get Better Results From Google Search

Getting Better Results From Google Search

By Md Faijul IslamPublished 4 years ago 5 min read

Over the years the digital platform has come a long way. It can be said that it’s a world of its own that has a very large population as well as a huge amount of data regarding all fields imaginable. And looking for something specific among such a large data bank is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Because of such reason search engines were introduced. Not only do they allow users to search through the whole digital platform but also provide you with and list of solutions related to your search and rank them as well.

Now you are thinking they provide a list, so how would they know from just some phrases? Well, you would be amazed at how close the results are. Yeah at first it was hard but now it’s different. The search algorithm has evolved over the years now the results are closer to what you are looking for.

And besides that, they are very strict regarding a site’s rank in search results. They don’t decide a site is related to your search term just by its meta description or name. They decide it by crawling the whole site and scanning each page’s contents. Also, they have criteria for the site functionalities and contents that must be met in order for it to be ranked. Like the site must contain quality and meaningful content, not some content that’s filled with keywords and practically readable. There’s also the site’s design., it’s traffic and many more. If a site satisfies the criteria set by the search engine, only then will the site be eligible for indexing the targeted search term. Thus making sure to show you results that are related to your search phase.

There’s more than one search engine. Such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Baidu, and Yandex. There are some of the topmost search engines out there. Among them, Baidu and Yandex are mostly used by China and Russia.

But among these search engines, the most used search engine is Google. It’s shown that over the last 11 years google search accounts for over 80% of the search engine market.

And why wouldn’t it be like this? Not only does Google have a huge collection of data but they are also very strict with their indexing. Thus providing you with a more accurate result. But the funny thing is we still don’t use it to the fullest. Google has implemented many functionalities in the way you can search in the search bar. Which can be very helpful to you and provide you with much more accurate results for the term you are looking for.

# Utilize the tab sections

Though it’s right up front and many use it but new users tend to go for the default tab the web tab. Wher all site links related to your search are shown. But if you were to use the other tab you could just search for a specific type of result. Like if you wanna search for a place you should search by selecting the map tab, similarly for images the image tab, and so on.

# Wrapping your search term in quotes

We all know that the results that are shown are related to the search term that you have entered. But sometimes you need accurate results meaning only results that have the word exactly as you have entered. So by wrapping the search term in quotes you can achieve just that.

Like instead of searching for live music streaming which might show results of sites that don’t even support music streaming. But because they are related to streaming they were shown. On the other hand, if we write “live music streaming”. Sites with the specific term will show.

# Ignore words or links using a hyphen

In some cases when we search we want to leave out some sites or words which are not needed. To achieve this you just need to type in the word or site that you want to exclude. Like “quality content -wordpress.com”, which means show all results that are related to quality content but ignore results that are found in “wordpress.com”

# Search under a specific site

Now it’s reasonable that there are a lot of pages under a site as well as subdomains as well or since the search option of the site doesn’t show the right result you are looking for another way to search the site. Now from the main site, it would be hard to search for the other children. But fear not google has already thought of this. You can just write “site:website address” beside your search term and that’s it.

For example “live videos streaming site:wordpress.com” by the search term we are telling google to search all pages and subdomains under wordpress.com for the term “live videos streaming”.

# Use the tools to filter results shown

Many tend to ignore the Tools button beside the settings button. But you won’t believe how useful it is. It allows you to filter the results according to time. Besides it shows various options according to the active tabs. Like in the image section if you only want to see images that are not licensed then do that from here as well.

# Find similar sites

A lot of time we look for alternatives to sites because either their features are too costly, or not user friendly or it’s about to close down. So we search for articles or other data bank platforms for sites under the same category in hopes to find a similar site. But the thing is you didn’t need to go through that much trouble. All you needed to write “related:site address” and you would be shown sites similar to the site address you have given. Such as “related:patreon.com”, which will show sites similar to Patreon.

# Combing multiple search terms

Now suppose you want to search using multiple search terms with quotes. Well, google your covertly. You can just use “OR” between the terms. Like as follows:

video streaming” OR “live streaming” OR “content creator”.

# Use descriptive search terms

Well, it’s pretty much self-explanatory. Instead of using single search terms, it is better to use a descriptive one. Like, suppose you are looking for a platform to earn money online so you typed “platform” in the search console. Which will show results that are far from what you are looking for. On the other hand, if you type “earn from home online” then the result will be closer to the thing that you were looking for.
