How to choose alpine skis?

Skiing, winter vacation

By Olaf PodolskiPublished about 5 hours ago 5 min read

Before the start of the winter season, it is important not only to decide on the place of future rest, but also to choose the right alpine skis. Moreover, not only the manufacturing company matters, but also the length, type of equipment, etc. Let's see what types of skis exist and how to choose them correctly.

Types of alpine skiing

Skis have several classifications. According to their shape, they are divided into directional and Twin Tip or "double toe".

Directional or classic alpine skis are suitable for riders with a good level of training, as they are designed for high speeds. Twin Tip is chosen by stunt lovers. They allow you to get out of even the deepest snow and move your back forward.

In addition, there are types of skis according to the style of skiing. They are divided into:

  • Track;
  • Universal;
  • for freestyle;
  • For freeride.

Trail models are chosen by riders who prefer to ride on well-equipped slopes. These skis are narrow and long. They are stable, flexible and have good speed potential.

Universal options allow you to ride both on a prepared track and sometimes go out on soft snow. These skis have a long nose and a wide waist.

Freeride models are distinguished by a wide waist (from 100 mm), a wide toe and rockers on both sides. This design provides controllability and stability.

Freestyle skis can be used on slopes and parks. The main characteristic of freestyle alpine skis is manoeuvrability and light weight, which allows you to perform various tricks.

Ratio of height and length of skis

Many beginner riders do not know how to choose alpine skis according to their height. In addition to the main characteristics, such as structural geometry, rigidity and width of the toe, all skis have a size. It is a length selected according to the height of the skier.

The features and driving style depend on the length of the model. For example, if you choose long skis, they will behave consistently at speed. Short models are more manoeuvrable. With their help, it is easier to turn. They crash into ice more easily and easily.

If you are interested in how to choose the length of your skis, it is important to know that the size is indicated in centimetres (cm). Usually the step between sizes is 10 cm. When choosing the optimal model, take into account:

  • Rider's height;
  • its weight;
  • Riding style.

If you make a mistake when choosing skis by height and weight, you can create a lot of problems for yourself. For example, if you buy or rent skis that are too short, they will be unstable. Conversely, skiing too long due to rapid acceleration will not allow you to make a turn.

That is, the right choice of alpine skis will provide better handling at the optimal speed for you.

Basic ski sizes

Usually, the size is not a condition that must be observed. However, there are still certain recommendations. For example, during sports competitions, the optimal length of skis for men is considered to be 165 cm, and for women - 155 cm.

In everyday life, they pay attention to this ratio of height and length of skis:

  • For men up to 190 cm tall and weighing no more than 100 kg, models with a length of 165 cm are suitable;
  • for lovers of medium and large arcs — skis 170–175 cm;
  • for women 150–180 cm tall and weighing up to 80 kg — models 155–165 cm.

How to choose alpine skis

So, let's dwell on the main points that will help you choose the right size for alpine skis. Important to consider:

  • level of training and potential of the skier. The rigidity of the equipment depends on this. The softer the skis, the less vibrations and slower the speed. Rigid models accelerate well, but require experience from the rider. Therefore, softer models are suitable for beginner skiers;
  • weight. Large riders, even if they are skiing for the first time, are not advised to choose soft models, as they simply will not support their weight and will squeeze;
  • type of track. If you are planning a holiday in the ski resorts of the Carpathians, we recommend that you select skis with a turning radius of up to 17 m and a waist in the range of 64-75 mm;
  • fasteners. It is important that the skistop runs along the waist and is wider than it. Usually, this indicator is important for freeriders;
  • riding style. Here it is important to determine what matters more to you - manoeuvrability or speed. The length of the skis depends on this. For beginners in skating, you can use a simple formula to determine the length: height minus 10 cm for men, and for women - height minus 15 cm. This will be the optimal indicator of the length of the skis. However, some fluctuations up or down are allowed. Carving enthusiasts should choose skis 5-10 cm shorter than the optimal value for leisurely skiing. Overweight people choose a model 5-10 cm longer. It is also suitable for freeriders, as such skis feel great on "puff" - deep, fluffy snow lying outside the slope.

How to choose skis for a child

Now that we have figured out with adults, we suggest that you familiarise yourself with how to choose alpine skis for a child. To do this, it is important to take into account the following nuances:

  • The material of the skis matters. Therefore, if you choose between wooden and plastic models, give preference to the latter option. It is stronger and does not require lubrication.
  • There should be notches on the skis that will prevent rolling back.
  • When buying or renting skis, do not take poles right away. This way the child will learn to balance faster and easier. Poles can be bought or rented later, when the baby will confidently stand on skis. Their height should reach the armpits. Sticks should be lightweight, with a rubber strap and handle, without a sharp tip for safety.

If you do not know how to choose the size of skis for your child by age, be guided by this advice: for babies 3-4 years old, choose short and wide skis. Their length should be slightly less than the height of the child, and the width should be in the range of 7.5-8 cm. For children 5-6 years old, you can choose a model 13-15 cm larger than their height and 4.7 to 4.9 cm wide.

Also pay attention to the fasteners. For children 2-6 years old, soft and semi-rigid fasteners are suitable, which can be used even with winter shoes. For a child over 6 years old, fasteners of greater rigidity are suitable. They are used in conjunction with hard ski boots.

If it is still difficult to choose skis on your own, do not despair! There are always specialists in rental offices who know all the intricacies of the selection of equipment for skating.
