How I Learned to Deal with Stress Without Feeling Overwhelmed (The Simple Techniques That Helped Me Stay Calm)

(The Simple Techniques That Helped Me Stay Calm)

By Aman SaxenaPublished about a month ago 5 min read

I used to feel like stress was something I couldn’t escape.

Every time life threw something at me,

I would feel overwhelmed, anxious, and like I couldn’t keep up.

But over time, I learned how to deal with stress in a way that didn’t leave me feeling completely drained.

Here’s how I learned to manage stress without feeling overwhelmed.

Stress was once a constant in my life.

I wasn’t just stressed about big events —

I was stressed about everything:

My never-ending to-do list.

The pressure to succeed at work.

My relationships.

My health.

The world’s problems.

It felt like there was always something weighing on me,

and no matter how hard I tried,

I couldn’t seem to shake that feeling of being overwhelmed.

I kept Googling things like:

“How to deal with stress when it feels too much?”

“How to stop feeling overwhelmed by everything?”

“How to cope with stress without burning out?”

The more I searched,

the more I realized:

Stress doesn’t have to control you.

You can learn how to manage it,

and more importantly, you can stop letting it take over your life.

⭐ STEP 1: I ACCEPTED THAT STRESS IS A NORMAL PART OF LIFE

This was a huge mindset shift for me.

For the longest time, I thought stress was something I had to avoid at all costs.

I thought if I was stressed, I was failing.

But the truth is:

Stress is a natural, human response to challenges.

It’s not about getting rid of stress completely —

it’s about learning how to respond to it in a healthy way.

When I started accepting that stress was part of life,

I stopped feeling like it was a personal failure.

Instead, I started focusing on how to manage it,

rather than trying to avoid it.

⭐ STEP 2: I LEARNED TO BREAK DOWN BIG TASKS INTO SMALL STEPS

Overwhelm often comes from looking at everything at once.

When I thought about everything I had to do,

it felt like too much.

So I started breaking things down into small, manageable steps.

Instead of thinking, “I need to finish this entire project,”

I would think, “Let’s start by writing the first paragraph.”

Instead of thinking, “I need to clean the whole house,”

I would think, “I’ll start by tidying up the kitchen.”

Breaking tasks down this way helped me focus on the next step, not the entire mountain.

And once I started, I felt the pressure lifting.

Action — even small action — helped me feel less overwhelmed.

⭐ STEP 3: I PRACTICED DEEP BREATHING TO CALM MY BODY

Stress is not just a mental thing —

it’s physical too.

When I felt stressed, I would notice my heart rate increasing,

my muscles tightening,

and my thoughts racing.

So, I turned to deep breathing to calm my body and mind.

Whenever I felt overwhelmed,

I would stop, close my eyes, and take slow, deep breaths:

Inhale for 4 counts.

Hold for 4 counts.

Exhale for 4 counts.

It only took a few minutes,

but deep breathing helped me feel grounded,

calmed my nervous system,

and cleared my mind.

And after a few rounds,

I felt like I could tackle whatever was stressing me out.

⭐ STEP 4: I SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS AND LEARNED TO SAY NO

Part of my stress came from saying yes to everything.

I didn’t want to disappoint people,

so I overcommitted,

took on too many tasks,

and said yes to things I didn’t have the time or energy for.

But here’s what I learned:

You don’t have to say yes to everything.

Setting realistic expectations — both for myself and others —

was a game changer.

I started saying no to things that drained me,

and I prioritized tasks that aligned with my values.

It was hard at first,

but once I got comfortable saying no,

I felt so much lighter.

I also gave myself permission to:

Set boundaries with work.

Say no to social commitments I didn’t feel up for.

Prioritize my well-being.

⭐ STEP 5: I PRACTICED MINDFULNESS TO STAY PRESENT

When life feels overwhelming,

it’s easy to get lost in thoughts about the future or past.

But stress often comes from thinking about everything at once.

So I turned to mindfulness.

Mindfulness is about staying present in the moment,

focusing on the task at hand,

and letting go of worries about the future or regrets from the past.

I practiced mindfulness in simple ways:

Focusing on my breath during stressful moments.

Doing one task at a time without multitasking.

Noticing the sensations around me, like the feeling of my feet on the ground or the sound of the wind.

Mindfulness helped me break the cycle of racing thoughts

and helped me feel more in control,

even in stressful situations.

⭐ STEP 6: I TOOK TIME FOR SELF-CARE AND REST

Self-care is crucial when you’re feeling stressed,

but it’s often the first thing to go when you’re overwhelmed.

I had to prioritize self-care to recharge my body and mind.

Some self-care practices that helped me were:

Taking walks in nature to clear my mind.

Taking breaks throughout the day to avoid burnout.

Doing activities that made me feel relaxed, like reading or listening to music.

Getting enough sleep every night.

I learned that rest is just as important as productivity —

you can’t pour from an empty cup.

When I made self-care a priority,

I found that I could handle stress better,

and I felt more balanced and energized.

⭐ WHERE I AM NOW

I’m not stress-free,

and I don’t expect to be.

But I now have tools to manage stress,

so it doesn’t feel like it’s controlling my life.

Here’s where I stand now:

I accept that stress is a part of life.

I break tasks down into small, manageable steps.

I use deep breathing to calm my body.

I set realistic expectations and learn to say no.

I practice mindfulness to stay present.

I make self-care a priority.

Stress still comes up,

but now, I have a much healthier relationship with it.

It no longer overwhelms me the way it used to.

⭐ CLOSING NOTE

If you’re struggling with stress, please know:

You’re not alone.

You’re not failing.

You don’t have to carry the weight of everything on your own.

Managing stress is about learning how to respond to it —

and to take care of yourself while navigating life’s challenges.

Start small.

Take deep breaths.

Set realistic expectations.

And prioritize your well-being.

You’ll find that even in stressful moments,

you can stay calm, grounded, and in control.
