Bath Bombs. They’re all the rage right now. Turning your bath into a magical swirl of colour, Lush bath bombs are probably the most popular. But just like most Lush products, they can be ridiculously expensive! So here’s how to save money and make your own.

Here are the Ingredients and Equipment:

  • Glass bowl
  • Spoon
  • Food colouring
  • Citric Acid
  • Bicarbonate of Soda/Baking Soda
  • Cornstarch/Cornflour
  • Bath Bomb Mold
  • Essential oil(optional)
  • Clean, empty spray bottle – you’ll see why we need this later on
  • Epsom Salt

Quick Note: Some people have said that you can use Cream of Tartar instead of Citric Acid. I tried this and it didn’t work so do not substitute citric acid with cream of tartar.

The Big Blue Bath Bomb from Lush

1. Get your bowl and add 1 cup of baking soda. Baking soda is more commonly known as Bicarbonate of Soda in Europe.

2. Pour in 1/2 a cup of citric acid. This can be quite pricey but I got mine from a local store. It was meant for cooking but was much cheaper.

3. Now add in 1/2 a cup of cornstarch/cornflour. Again, cornstarch is more commonly known in the USA and cornflour in Europe.

4. Add 1/2 a cup of Epsom salt. This is optional but I would recommend it. Epsom salt soothes your muscles, releases stress and calms you down. You should find this in your local store but you may have to order it or go to a different store if they don't have it. PLEASE DO NOT REPLACE EPSOM SALT FOR REGULAR SALT. Mix it well so all the powders are combined together.

Now for the scientific part…

When a bath bomb comes into contact with water, it usually fizzes and slowly melts away. This is because the baking soda, citric acid and water combined create a chemical reaction. Cornstarch just binds and helps it keep its shape.

5. Time for the liquids. Because citric acid, bicarbonate of soda and a liquid will just fizz away, we will put it in a spray bottle so the liquid is spread out evenly in little amounts.

6. Pour into your spray bottle; 3 teaspoons of essential oil, 1 teaspoon of water and a little bit of food colouring (depending on how strong your food colouring is). You don't want to add too much food colouring as this could possibly stain your bath or even yourself.

You may not have an essential oil but you can purchase it from here: When choosing an essential oil, it is best to go for something calming and aromatic like lavender, vanilla and rose rather than peppermint. Nevertheless, this is completely up to you.

7. Shake it well and spray a bit whilst stirring the mix until the bottle has finished.

8. Get your mould and shove the mixture into the mould so it overfills. Push the two lids together and leave it for 24 hours to set.

Ta-da! Your very own bath bomb. You can sell, use or give it as a gift to a friend. To use, run a warm bath. Drop it in and watch you bath turn into a rainbow of colour. From this, I managed to make two large bath bombs and one medium sized one and it only costs around £5 whereas you would be spending £12.50 at Lush for the same amount!

Don't use the bath bombs if you are prone to eczema or have easily irritated skin.
