Kitchens in apartments are mostly ignored when it comes to decorating the home. The kitchen is the heart of any home and a gathering space for family and friends. Decorating and remodeling a kitchen can do wonders, and it offers the opportunity to stretch your style and creativity. The proper design and placement of accessories gives the kitchen a warm and inviting touch. An attractive cooking space is bound to make an excellent impression on your guests and other people who access the area for the first time. However, it is important to carefully plan the design of your kitchen. Apartment interior designers can help with this. A good interior design company will work with their clients on all aspects of decoration and help select a practical kitchen design based on their budget.

Here are a few interior design tips for decorating small apartment kitchens–

Increase Workspace – Generally, in small apartments, the kitchen counter space is limited. Consider using rollaway carts and drop-leaf carts, which will help increase the kitchen workspace.

Keep it Simple and Open – If you have an open kitchen from the main space, make sure to style it from every angle. Use stacks of white dishware with the wooden cabinets in a small kitchen to create a streamlined look.

Maximize Every Inch for Storage – In small apartment kitchens, there is never enough storage space. Always stick to a tonal palette to keep it looking clean. If upper cabinets seem heavy and bulky, consider open shelving instead as it holds just as much and opens up a cramped kitchen. There are other clever ways to increase the storage which include –

  • Suction cup shelves and baskets – Add this type of storage below cabinets, wall space, and the sides of cabinets to effectively utilize all the space in your kitchen.
  • Cabinet door lid rack - The inside of most cabinets has enough space for a rack to store the lids of pots and pans.
  • Hanging baskets - Use hanging wire or woven baskets from a planter wall bracket or a hanger in the ceiling for additional storage.

Scale Down – Whether it is a table or mini appliances, choosing smaller versions of anything will create a significant difference in the overall kitchen space. Get creative by bringing in small storage pieces and accessories with unexpected style.

Use Shelves for Extra Storage – Acquire some extra storage space by adding a shelf between cabinets or above the kitchen sink. Use the shelves to display and store dishes. However, always make sure not to overdo the same because the fewer and smaller the items, the bigger and tidier your kitchen would appear.

Lighten up – The right lighting can make a kitchen seem larger regardless of the colors of walls and cabinets. For extra impact, add battery operated or plug in under cabinet LED strip lighting under shelves or cabinets. Use magnetic, battery-operated puck lights for task lighting. If possible, plan a slender floor lamp or small lamp for the kitchen counter.

Add a Backsplash – Choosing the right design for backsplash can instantly change the overall impression of wall space. A backsplash does not require much empty wall space. Use a bold pattern to bring some fresh energy into your cooking space or go for a contemporary pattern in neutral tones for traditional kitchen.

Hang Pots – As pots take a lot of room in cabinets, consider using a pot rack to keep them up and out of the way. Hang the pots from the ceiling so that they are within your arm’s reach when you need them. If you don’t have space for a pot rack that hangs from the ceiling, look for a smaller option that mounts on the wall. This may provide extra storage space while incorporating the pots into your design scheme.

Remove Cabinet Doors - Cabinet doors can at times, make things feel closed off. Therefore, remove them to open the area. Paint the cabinet interiors with a color that matches your kitchen space décor as this gives the room some depth. However, do not simply display dishes in open spaces; instead, use textured baskets and glass jars to keep supplies organized and stylish.

Use a Kitchen Breakfast Corner Table - If your kitchen has a breakfast corner, you can maximize this space with a few select pieces of furniture, such as folding chairs that can be stored when not in use. Round tables frees up valuable kitchen space. On the other hand, a drop-leaf table is another option that can be collapsed when not in use to provide more floor space for kitchen work. You can use only one leaf if you don't have enough space to open the table. Bistro table is yet another table design option that fools the eye with height, making it appear to take up less space.

Add Kitchen Color – Use unique color patterns to personalize the apartment kitchen. If your kitchen wall has a lot of exposed space, paint it with a bright color as this gives the area a modern look. On the other hand, if painting the whole wall is not feasible, add a printed shade over the windows or a patterned rug on the floor.

Be Practical – Keeping the kitchen clean and tidy all the time is a challenging task as things get splashed with water or food, and grease can build up on items. While selecting accessories for the kitchen space, be practical and look for items that can be easily cleaned or wiped off during the regular cleaning process. For items that are framed such as handwritten recipes, make sure the backing is well sealed so that dirt and grease don’t get inside the frame.

Decorating small kitchens can be challenging as you may not always have a lot of room to work or rearrange major furniture elements. With the concept of open kitchen being more in trend, there is no separation between the kitchen and living area. Considering the above-mentioned tips will help personalize your kitchen space to suit your unique needs and reflect your style. Partner with a professional interior designer to achieve your goals.
