Beautiful Eyes, Beautiful Soul

A Simple Cosmetic Eyelid Tape

By Ray TangPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Interest in our craft started when I was young; pretty much when I was still a kid. After my child-modeling gig, I really wanted to have that coveted upper eyelid wrinkle more commonly called a double eyelid, or in technical terms, supratarsal crease.

Like most Asian kids without double eyelids – known as single eyelids – I fiddled around with my eyelids hoping to get them to fold. I sort of find it uncomfortable to admit this, but my 'old-style' eyelids during my youth made me look rather sleepy and less alert. Sometimes classmates and teachers at school, who are not Asian, would mistaken me as being disinterested in class and I'd feel even more self-conscious of my looks. It was this obsessive period, which spanned into my early 20s, where I learned if some of the upper eyelid skin was pulled downwards over a developing crease, it will encourage a conformational change within the eyelid skin.

Boy meets girl... Ray meets Emma.

And the future inventors date for a year. As my future-wife's student visa was about to expire, thus she must return to South Korea, I needed to find a way to keep the relationship going. He asks Emma if he can experiment on her uneven eyelid to fix it.

Using the idea from the 'holding the line' eyelid exercise, the couple invents the n-tape and Emma trials it. On the first day, she got all-day results! This was much faster than using just the 'version 1' f-tape alone when I was a teenager!

The results were promising. In 5 months, Emma's double eyelid became permanent... so off to South Korea we went to work on our patent! Over the research & development years, it was concluded that permanent results occurred readily when only one eye was a single eyelid.

Eventually, a medical school notices our patented invention, and after a meticulous appraisal process, we were acknowledged for our work and rewarded a prize in the HealthEDGE Challenge for Medical Devices!

As we're saving to design and purchase a machine to make our invention, producing the cosmetic tape by hand with our trusty pair of scissors proves to be a deeply passionate experience...

Especially when we hear how our creativity have made others happy!

Ever since he was a kid, Steven always had uneven eyelids until he tried our invention.

When we get such heart-felt messages from literally strangers we've helped online, there is no doubt our little project have given us so much joy, all because of our scissors and medical tape!

My wife's scissors, orange; mine, blue.

Cutting tapes while waiting for my appointment.

Cutting tapes have been such an integral part of our lives for the last few years that even in class I was using my scissors!:

Helping other people fix their uneven eyelids is such a personal experience. We'd be in communication with random strangers for a span of a few months. Each morning, we'd check over videos submitted by our clients to make sure our invention is used properly. In the event that a client's results seem to back-track, we'd double check their submitted videos and look for signs of the tapes being worn differently.

At the end, it is all smiles for everyone!

We have always thought of beauty as something more than the trend-matching conformity of mere accessorization. It comes from being more authentic, from being more yourself ― from not looking the best, but from looking your best. Ultimately, being beautiful is the look of radiant happiness from the uninhibited expression of your true self.

We think there is a profound and enduring personal growth in understanding the dedication of long-term choices, which creates beauty for oneself. True beauty is something more than just the absence of imperfections; it's about the look from being complete while living effortlessly natural.
