8 EASY WAYS TO SWITCH TO AN ECO-FRIENDLY LIFESTYLE
Did you know that the toothbrush you used as a child is still lying around somewhere? That’s right! Plastic takes close to 100 years to disintegrate.
Our daily choices – the ones we barely think about – play a huge part in the global pollution problem. The extent of pollution and deforestation are not helping the situation either but we can do our part. We can reduce our carbon footprints and play a small role in salvaging whatever we can of the environment.
We can make a conscious effort to switch to an eco-friendly lifestyle. Here are a few easy ways to do so:
1. Check your electronics – Don’t leave your electronics on standby. Electronics consume a lot of electricity and leaving them on standby will consume excess energy. Not only will you consume unnecessary power but your electricity bills will run up too. Instead, invest in eco-friendly technology. Buy energy-efficient devices and products for your house. Run your washing machine when there’s a full load and switch to the cold setting. Another great tip would be to switch to LED bulbs.
2. Switch to renewable energy – Depending on where you live, research for options to switch to renewable energy and maybe fit solar panels in your home. This will not only reduce your consumption of electricity but will reduce your carbon footprint significantly.
3. Watch your diet and don’t waste – Reduce your intake of red meat and meat products in general; this in turn will reduce your carbon footprints. Cook just as much as you need because the less leftovers you have, the less you will have to put into your refrigerator, which in turn cuts your energy consumption.
4. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Experiment with minimalistic living. Buy exactly what you need. You could try cutting down on unnecessary things, get rid of extra clutter, give away whatever is not being used. You could experiment with DIYs from Pet Bottles, and turn them into bird feeders, decorative vases, pen holders, turn them into hedges for your rose garden. An old pair of jeans could be stitched into a bag or used as a kitchen cloth. Old t-shirts can be modified into blouses or if you have pets then you can make them some tug toys. There’s a lot one can do.
5. Cut out paper – Cut down on paper consumption and switch to more online ways of doing tasks. For example – instead of posting post-its on the refrigerator put a reminder on your phone. Instead of using a notepad physically, use a notebook app.
6. CYOB – Carry Your Own Bag! When you go to the supermarket, carry your own bag instead of buying a plastic or paper bag from them every single time you go there.
7. Use public transport or a healthy mode of commuting – Cut down on driving your car too often. See if you can carpool with a neighbour or a friend – so the both of you reduce your carbon footprints and there are less cars on the road. Walk or cycle whenever you can. Not only will this keep you fit but it will contribute towards saving the planet.
8. Switch to Eco-Friendly Sanitary Products And Toiletries – Think of all the soap packets, shampoo sachets and bottles and plastic sanitary pads we use and throw out every month! You can consider using a bamboo toothbrush instead of your plastic one, switch to bar shampoos and bar conditioners, and opt for chemical free makeup and beauty products (you’ll be saving the animals too). When it comes to eco-friendly period products, switch to new age brands like Avni. Some of their offerings include Safepad (one of the best cloth pads in India), and Ezeepad (cotton disposable pads that contain no plastic unlike regular big brand sanitary pads). Avni Menstrual Cups are one of the best period products online! Just one menstrual cup lasts for 8-10 years and saves thousands of single use pads from ending up in the landfill. What’s more? Sustainable period products are good for you, just as much as they benefit the environment.
