5 Unique Costume Parties for Your Next Birthday

We love dressing up but hate being derivative.

Costume parties can be fun, but so many ideas have already been played out. Here's a list of totally original costume parties to make your birthday special.

1. James Bond Karaoke

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, and so are costume parties! Surround yourself with glamor, gambling, and sexy sexy spy girls this year for a birthday party anyone would kill to get into. Guests receive an invitation shaped like a LICENSE TO KILL, informing them of the date, time, and dress code for this special birthday event. The dress code is casino glamor-slut with inspiration from any era from the 1960s to 2021. These guests will be your Bond Girls, and you will be the infamous 007 himself! However, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, this will be a surprise karaoke party. Spend the night singing James Bond theme songs through the ages. Guests will experience an ALL TIME HIGH as you open your gifts sent FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (be sure to send an invite to a Russian who won’t be able to attend, but will send a gift anyway). NOBODY DOES IT BETTER than you when it comes to party planning!

2. Bartender Birthday Bash

Do you work at a bar and deal with difficult and offensive customers? Now is your chance to flip the script! For your next birthday, have all your friends serve your drinks, listen to your stories, and get zero tips at the end of the night while you insult them and make inappropriate comments. No one is dressed as a bouncer, so they can’t kick you out! Raise hell and raise a glass to the people who always ruin your shift.

3. Tony Shalhoub Birthday Party

Make your birthday special this year by celebrating it on October 9, award-winning actor Tony Shalhoub’s birthday! All your guests must arrive dressed as one of Shalhoub’s many characters throughout his incredible career, from the big screen or the stage, and you must dress as the Tony-winning Tony himself!! All guests should remain in character all night- anyone who breaks character must immediately leave. And remember, a Tony Shalhoub birthday party wouldn’t be complete without the man himself! (It’s his birthday after all.)

*Please note that this year, I will be personally hosting a Tony Shalhoub Birthday Party, so you’ll have to wait until next year to have yours! I invite you to come to mine dressed as Luigi from Cars, Chess Club Member from Searching for Bobby Fischer, or Tony Shalhoub (himself) from The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie. And Mr. Shalhoub, if you’re reading this, I look forward to celebrating our birthdays together!

4. Sharknado

If you’re like me, you like to be the center of attention. You also have great taste in films and love marine biology. In that case, I know exactly what kind of party you need; sharknado! Have your guests dress up as sharks and run in circles around you all day. This one is pretty simple, but you will feel like the world revolves around you! Welcome to the center of the cyclone (with teeth)!

5. Scooby Doo Murder Mystery Party

If you’re willing to put in a lot of work for great results, then it’s time to get the gang together for this mystery-filled costume party. Before you put on your orange sweater or purple dress, take out your magnifying glass because this isn’t your average Scooby party! Everyone must dress up as a scooby villain, and together you work to find out which of them is the criminal in the night’s case. This time, it’s the scooby gang that’s in trouble, and the villains need to solve it! You’ll need to know everyone’s character choice well before the party starts so you can create realistic motives. Look forward to partying with Glob, Sludge Monster from the Earth's Core, werewolf Shaggy, and many more terrifying ghoulies. Remember to remind your guests that Scrappy Doo is not a valid choice for a villain costume because we simply do not accept what Scooby Doo: The Movie (Spooky Island) did to our favorite puppy nephew. Make sure you serve plenty of scooby snacks to keep those meddling kids and their stupid dog motivated!
