Many of us are more concerned than ever about keeping fit, but gym subscriptions are often found to be a waste by people who no longer use them. Gyms can be off putting places for a number of reasons, and so a growing number of people are now setting up their own gyms at home for them to use privately at any time.

If this is something that you are considering, then here, Chill Air Conditioning share their insight into a few things that you need to think about before you begin.

1. Equipment

All good gyms need the right equipment, and so this needs some careful thought. Focus on what your overall goals are and what you enjoy doing at the gym to narrow down what items you should be investing in, otherwise they could soon become very expensive drying racks for your washing. Try to look for pieces that can be versatile, so that you can use them in different ways as your aims change in order to allow you to adapt your workout and keep things interesting.

2. Air conditioning

When you are working hard in the gym, you can become hot and sweaty very quickly no matter what time of year it is. That means that you will need proper ventilation and temperature control to ensure that your home gym remains comfortable at all times.

An air conditioning system can maintain airflow, capture bacteria, dust and other pollutants and keep the temperature consistent. This will help to make your working atmosphere healthier and ensure that your workout is more successful.

3. Location

You need to decide on the best location for your gym, and this might be dictated by available space. If you are setting up a gym upstairs, check to see whether the floor is strong enough to cope with your weights and workouts, whilst a garage might need some insulation. You might also want to invest in soundproofing for your home gym so that any music, banging of weights or moans of exertion do not bother anyone else.

4. Colour themes

It might be tempting to leave the décor as it is, but the aesthetic of your home gym can have an effect on the way that you work out. Generally speaking, muted colours tend to be popular for home gyms as they project a more calm and serene atmosphere than the bright and bold colours associated with public gyms.

Also try to make the most of any views that your gym might have and look at including mirrors to reflect natural light whilst also providing visual feedback on your form and technique.

5. Technology

It can be useful to look at the technology that you want in your home gym. Depending on how you intend to workout and who with, you might want to set up a sound system so that you are not restricted to headphones.

You could also install televisions to keep you entertained during long runs or cycles and even think about a camera to record your workouts. It may even be worth adding a mini fridge for post workout snacks and drinks and some storage solutions for towels, equipment and water bottles. Of course, all of this will also rely on the space having a good Wi-Fi signal too.

A home gym is a great way to stay on course when it comes to reaching your goals as it not only offers convenience but also a more comfortable and pleasant experience than many public gyms can provide. It is important to think about how the space will work though, and how to make it comfortable, not just the weights you want to lift.
