A few weeks more and February is about to end. We will soon have to say goodbye to summer as autumn is just around the corner. For many Australians, autumn means easter and also a perfect time to do your planned outdoor activities. Unfortunately, there are still restrictions about going outdoors because of the pandemic. But, who says you can't leave your house, camp outside and do a barbecue party in your backyard? Since it is great weather, you can ultimately spend most of your time in your backyard, thus cutting your energy consumption. When autumn comes, you can save more and prepare your home for the highest months of electricity usage, winter.

On the other hand, autumn is also the most appropriate time to double-check electrical wirings and other appliances. Making sure that your whole household is in its best condition, as well as safe from possible fires, although it entirely depends on where you reside in the country. Check with the Bureau of Meteorology to find out if your area is a fire risk.

To ensure that your homes are safe and sound throughout the coming autumn, here are five handy electrical tips for you.

Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors

The batteries of smoke detectors are usually changed at least twice a year before they start beeping. Smoke detectors are very important for every household as it is the primary step to improve home fire safety. They are recommended to be installed in every living room, bedroom and hallways that should be interconnected for maximum protection. As our homes are filled with things that can easily catch fire, such as fabrics, plastics, and so much more, it is best to check your smoke detectors now and then. They can help detect a possible fire before it becomes bigger so you can not only protect your family but your whole house and other investments. Installing new batteries will help keep your smoke detectors more accurate.

Test your lights

This may sound all too easy, but if you have a big house and lots of lights inside and out, it is most important to check if they all are working properly. If in case you notice one that is constantly blinking, make sure to replace it immediately to prevent them from burning out. And if you're still using the traditional kind of bulbs, maybe its time to change it to LED lights. LEDs are 80% energy efficient. They are good for the environment because they only consume a sufficiently lower amount of energy compared to fluorescent and incandescent lights. Less energy use decreases a good amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

Check outdoor outlets

Since autumn is coming, you'll probably be using your leaf blowers more often than not. But before you use them, make sure to test your outdoor outlets because they had been idle for a long time. If they are not working properly, make sure to ask for professional help to replace or repair your outlet. It could also be a good time to buy socket protectors so that they won't freeze up during the winter and also to protect them in every season in case you won't be using them.

Install a generator

Power outages can happen when you least expect it. They could happen in the middle of the night or when the sun was high up but both may make you uncomfortable, especially if you have a kid at home. Although a generator set may be a little pricey and out of the budget, it is a great investment that you can never be wrong with. So even if a power outage happens in the middle of winter, you can be ensured that your family will remain comfortable. This can ultimately last for years so it won't be a waste.

Schedule an electrical maintenance

Seasonal electrical maintenance can ultimately help you make sure that every stuff you have is still working in optimal condition. Call your local electrician Northern Beaches expert to ask for scheduled electrical maintenance and have them check all your wirings, outlets, and appliances. You can also ask them for advice and recommendations to make your house more electrically safe.
