4 Things That Can Add to Your Home's Security

Keeping your family safe is a top priority for any parent or caretaker. Here are some simple things you can do to keep your family safe.

According to the United States Department of Justice, one property crime happens every four seconds. Even worse, 38 percent of assaults and 60 percent of rapes occur during a home invasion. These are frightening statistics, but the good news is you can protect yourself and your family by starting with these four steps.

1. Keep an Eye on Your Property

From a simple doorbell camera to the sophisticated 4K security system, being able to see who is approaching your house is paramount to home safety. Technology allows you to capture and record events, as well as review footage on most electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops. Doorbell cameras can be purchased at most big-box stores and can be installed in less than 30 minutes by most homeowners. The high-tech 4K security cameras should be installed by trained professionals. Most models offer zoom capabilities, and many come with night vision surveillance. Just like their less-expensive counterparts, these high-end cameras offer on-the-go monitoring so you can see what is happening on your property from anywhere that has internet service. If you connect these devices to a professional monitoring company, the bad guys can be captured before they even realize they are on camera.

2. Invest in a Vault

The first place any knowledgeable thief goes once entry into the home has been achieved is the master bedroom. Many people keep their most-prized possessions here, and the crooks know this. Don't give them the satisfaction. Instead, invest in a walk-in vault. Custom-built walk-in vaults are becoming very popular and are perfect for storing personal papers, jewelry, weapons and ammunition. They can also be used as a storm shelter since every vault door has an emergency release on the inside. Because most walk-in vaults are custom built, they can be hidden in plain sight, and a visible vault is a vulnerable vault.

3. Secure Your Doors

Nearly 35 percent of burglars walk right through the front door, whether they simply twist the knob or kick it in. At least make them earn their ill-gotten gains. One of the first things you can do is install a deadbolt lock. Combined with a reinforced striker plate, the deadbolt is more secure than a standard spring lock. Don't forget to secure any sliding glass doors. Something as simple as an old broom handle laid in the track will keep intruders from opening the door. Consider installing door sensors and glass-break sensors for a high-tech touch. If you have recently moved into your house or apartment, you should change all the locks. It's no telling how many strangers are out there with a key to your place.

4. Light Up the Perimeter

It might sound creepy, but burglars are watching your house. The presence of lighting is something they do not want, so an automated lighting system is a great deterrent to their activities. Studies have shown that outdoor lighting can cut crime by nearly 40 percent, so it only makes sense to use lights to your advantage. First, go to the hardware store and buy a timer for $5. Most have multiple settings, and many can control multiple lights. Set the timers to different times throughout the day to give your house the lived-in look. Plus, it saves on energy costs as opposed to burning the lights all night. Motion detectors crank the automation up a notch. Have them trained on your driveway and the perimeter of your property, and they will light up once they detect the slightest movement. Using technology to your advantage, you can also control the lights remotely with your smartphone or an app, linking them to cameras and security systems. What better way to arrive home after an enjoyable evening out than with a well-lit entry and the peace of mind that the house is safe.

Over two million homeowners will experience a break-in or burglary this year. Take control of the situation and prepare your home against an invasion before it's too late.
