Budapest, the stunning capital of Hungary, is a city of dramatic architecture, historic baths, vibrant streets, and a nightlife that's second to none. If you have four days, you can get a perfect taste of its history, culture, and hidden gems. Here's how I spent 4 unforgettable days in Budapest — and how you can too!

Day 1: Arrival and Exploring the Heart of Pest

Morning:

After arriving at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, I headed straight to the city center. I recommend staying near Deák Ferenc Square — it's the heart of the city and perfect for exploring on foot.

First stop: St. Stephen’s Basilica. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the city (trust me, it’s worth the stairs or a small fee for the elevator).

Afternoon:

Wander down the elegant Andrássy Avenue, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lined with shops and cafes. Don't miss the Hungarian State Opera House — the exterior alone is stunning.

Evening:

For your first Budapest dinner, head to a traditional Hungarian restaurant like Menza in Liszt Ferenc Square. Try the classic goulash and a glass of Hungarian wine.

After dinner, take a leisurely stroll along the Danube Promenade — the city lit up at night is pure magic.

Day 2: Buda Castle and the Historic Hills

Morning:

Time to cross the famous Chain Bridge into Buda, the hilly, historic side of the city.

Catch the funicular up to Buda Castle and explore the Castle District — charming cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and centuries-old churches await.

Afternoon:

Visit Fisherman’s Bastion for postcard-perfect views of Parliament across the river. The nearby Matthias Church with its colorful tiled roof is a must-see inside and out.

Enjoy lunch at a café in the Castle District. Try a local specialty like chicken paprikash.

Evening:

Relax at one of Budapest's famous baths. Rudas Baths are close by and offer a magical rooftop hot pool overlooking the Danube — especially beautiful at sunset.

Day 3: Museums, Ruin Bars, and Thermal Spas

Morning:

Visit Heroes’ Square and the adjacent City Park.

Here you'll find the Museum of Fine Arts and the impressive Vajdahunyad Castle, a fairy-tale-like structure that's lovely for wandering.

Afternoon:

No trip to Budapest is complete without a few hours at Széchenyi Thermal Bath — Europe’s largest medicinal bath. Floating in the warm outdoor pools surrounded by Neo-Baroque architecture is pure bliss.

Evening:

Dive into Budapest’s legendary nightlife at a ruin bar — crumbling old buildings transformed into quirky bars.

The most iconic is Szimpla Kert — think mismatched furniture, art installations, and a wild, unforgettable atmosphere.

Day 4: Markets, Margaret Island, and a River Cruise

Morning:

Start your day at the Great Market Hall. Browse for souvenirs (like paprika and embroidered linens), sample Hungarian street food, and enjoy a hearty breakfast.

Afternoon:

Take a walk or rent a bike around Margaret Island, a peaceful green oasis in the middle of the Danube. There’s a musical fountain, medieval ruins, and beautiful gardens to explore.

Evening:

End your Budapest trip with a sunset Danube river cruise.

Seeing the Parliament Building, Buda Castle, and Chain Bridge illuminated at night from the water is an unforgettable farewell to this incredible city.

Final Tips:

Currency: Hungary uses the Forint (HUF), not the Euro.

Transport: Budapest has excellent public transport, including trams, buses, and the metro.

Language: Hungarian is the main language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Etiquette: Always say hello ("Szia" or "Jó napot") when entering shops or restaurants.

Budapest is a city that truly offers something for everyone — whether you love history, food, architecture, or just soaking in thermal baths under the stars.

Four days felt just right, but part of me never wanted to leave.

I know I’ll be back someday — and I hope you get to experience it too!
