4 Areas of Home Maintenance You Shouldn’t Ignore

Home Maintenance Tips for your Home

By Sara RussellPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

When it comes to home maintenance, many of us would be quick to admit that we’re not up to date with everything we should be. Unfortunately, we generally tend to wait too long, until a clear problem appears, before we really act and do something about it. By that point the repair costs could be running into the thousands and the inconvenience could be severe. Many of these issues could be stopped before they begin by implementing some basic home maintenance, whether its checking water and pipes or getting garage roller door repairs. Check up on these 4 critical areas of home maintenance to prevent major issues before they begin.

Home Electronics and Machinery

A lot of the money that we invest in our homes is what is inside it – that is the fittings, electronics and machines that we use every day to make life easier. From air conditioners to clothes dryers and dishwashers, chances are some of these labour saving devices are in your home and help to make your lifestyle more comfortable. However, they can also be very expensive to repair or replace, and unmaintained appliances can cost you in other terms too, such as home damage or electricity bills. That’s why this is one area where it’s important to be on top of maintenance.

For any appliances or electronics in your home, it’s a good idea to be familiar with the instruction booklet and to have a handyman or service provider on call. The last thing you want is to be stuck with your car in the garage and the roller door not working when you need to get to work, so keep the repair number on hand. Maintenance is important to prevent issues before they arise. Well maintained air conditioning units and refrigerators use less energy and save you money. Maintained washers and driers are less likely to catch fire or flood causing damage to your home. Staying on top of maintenance for these appliances and being sure they are always in good shape can really save you money in the long term.

Pumps and Pipes

Water management more often than not is the root cause of problems in a home, and pipes and pumps are at the heart of it. Flooding can be due to a number of causes, but when it happens it can quickly cause a lot of damage and be very costly to correct. Checking gutters to ensure water is drained away correctly is an easy and important aspect to keep maintained, as excess water collecting around a house can cause a range of problems, from the foundation to mould.

If you have pumps in your home, checking on them at regular intervals and making sure they are properly maintained is very important as they can often cause inconvenience and damage. Having bad pipes and gutters or plumbing is an issue that is often best help by replacing the problem parts, rather than waiting for something to happen.

Home Foundation

The foundation is the base of your home, so you can imagine that problems there are really going to be difficult and very expensive to deal with. Some cracks in the foundation aren’t a big deal and generally don’t require much repair, apart from perhaps an injection with epoxy resin. But bigger cracks could be a sign of more serious issues that take a lot more to repair.

Getting cracks or issues with your foundation looked at as soon as they arise is a good idea to prevent excess costs and inconvenience.

Pest Infestations

Anyone who has experienced the effect of termites on a home will know the extreme cost and inconvenience these pests can cause. Mice, rats, even possums can cause lasting damage to a home, reducing the value and even causing the home to be completely unusable.

In some cases, pests can be difficult to detect – until it’s too late. If you live in a wooden home or an area that’s prone to pest infestation, it’s probably worthwhile having regular pest checks to prevent the infestation before it comes.

Prevention is always better than cure, and in the case of these essential areas of home maintenance that certainly rings true. Staying on top of these areas of home maintenance will save you time, money and inconvenience, for better and more cost effective home management.
