Writers: You Don’t Need A Writing Desk

A writer is a writer no matter where they write

By Elise L. BlakePublished 4 years ago 3 min read

A writer is someone who puts pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and creates a world that didn’t exist before, regardless of where they are sitting when they create this world.

You don’t need a fancy desk or a whole office dedicated to writing to be a writer and anyone who says that it’s a must, is probably just trying to sell you a desk.

As you grow as an author you may want to have a dedicated space to organize manuscripts, notes, and anything else, but this space can be anywhere and anything from your bedside table to the kitchen counter.

Or if you’re like me, then they’re all over the place in your bedroom, including being used as bookmarks when the creative muse whispered an idea into my head as I was reading. I love finding these little notes when I either reread the book or shift it around on the bookcase and find bits of paper sticking out of it.

Sure having a dedicated place to write where everything is exactly as you like can help you craft your masterpiece and can be great, but it’s not a major necessity.

Not only is it not necessary, but in the beginning, it can be a huge cost that you don’t need to spend in order to be a writer.

Before I bought my current writing desk: Just a cheap fall-a-particle board desk from Amazon

I did all of my work at my kitchen table or with a small lap desk I kept by my bed that my mother bought me for my birthday one year.

Sure, having an official dedicated place to work is great, but the freedom to move around and write wherever you want can help keep you moving and keep your creativity going.

Write at your local cafe or sit on a park bench when the weather is decent enough outside. You can even sit on that same park bench when the weather isn’t so great and use that as inspiration for your scene.

If the scene you’re writing is moody, take inspiration from the way those around you act when caught up in the rain. (Maybe sit inside the cafe for this and observe those who pass by the bench instead of sitting in the rain on the bench.)

There's always time in the future to buy that fancy writing desk, you can even use it for motivation.

You can say to yourself as you work at your kitchen table, “When I finish this book, I’ll buy a desk.”

This decision is entirely up to you, but the desk is not a necessary part of being a writer in the beginning, if at all.

One of my author friends writes all of her novels laying in her bed with her laptop and notebook propped up on her lap. She says being in a place where she is relaxed, comfortable, and safe, helps her get into her writing brain in order to write.

Even with my desk I still often choose to do my work in the kitchen or in bed with my cat curled around me. (Or knocking my stuff to the floor when she’s not sitting on my keyboard.)

A desk doesn’t make you a writer, or any less a professional one.

Buy the desk if you want it, or don’t if you can mange to work elsewhere.

Don’t forget to keep writing.

With love,
