Working with Mike

A return to comedy

Video of my New Years Video with Mike Fallek

Firstly, welcome to my new blog. This will be behind the scenes of videos and extra insights into my life, stuff I like and projects I am working on. Think of it as a combination of my vlogs and my own little press release updates.

If you are a fan of my channel you have noticed I have been collaborating with internet comedian Mike Fallek.

I have known Mike for a while as an animator and editor, and one of the fastest and most productive. Firstly I came to Mike so I could make more sketches and make them more efficiently. My pages have to be a combination of both a business and art on youtube and any where.

Sometimes that decision has to go closer to one way than the other. Sometimes I totally make a film for me, a passion project. Other times my decision is to make sure that a concept gets out the door to keep creating content. All my movies on youtube and instagram are well thought out based on how much time and resources I have to best keep everyone happy.

The benefit of working with Mike is his vast knowledge of skills. Mike is an independent animator and freelancer with his own studio and a one man production team. So if the sound goes awry but we have no time to re-record, Mike can fix the audio in post because he is a professional podcaster and his own sound mixer for movies. This applies to most everything in filmmaking.

Our New Years Video is the start of us getting on a rhythm to create together. Mike's philosophy of comedy is to translate his stand-up into sketch ideas. This can be good and bad. Sometimes the sketch is clever but has to be in a voice more like my style of comedy. Other times the writing is a totally different problem because of two people combining thoughts, it's weird when written down but simple to understand:

For the most part, my channels are an extension of me. So if something is funny but I don't relate, it has to be scrapped or re-written for my perspective. The writing process goes like this: Mike or I have an idea, one of us creates a script, we punch it up (adding and editing jokes), then record and edit. When it came to this New Years Sketch the punch up involved a major restructure.

Ok so I love New Years; I think it's romantic and fun, and my Mom's birthday is around then so for me i have great memories with it. Now granted, there are annoying things that get in the way of that fun so a video making fun of New Years is a great idea.

Mike on the other hand REALLY doesn't like New Years. The original sketch was much longer and involved a lot of things I think are nice about New Years.

This stuff was clever and observational but not how I felt, which can be a problem. The solution was to rephrase stuff as potential issue and to cut what was really Mike trying to rewrite the whole Holiday to be different.

I think the end product is great though. Go check it out and see more in the future.
