Why I Started Writing: A Blogger's Story

Just the Beginning

By Dillon RitterPublished 4 years ago 4 min read

I never really considered myself a writer. I was that person who always doodled in the margins of my notebooks and wrote short stories for fun, but I never thought that what I wrote could be considered literature. It wasn't until I started college and had to take a composition class as a requirement that I realized how much writing can benefit your life. This is my account of how writing has impacted me and why I think everyone should write, regardless of their occupation or interests.

I always loved reading growing up. It was my escape from the reality of my life and I would often get lost in the stories. History was always my favorite subject in school because I loved learning about different cultures and times. When I started college, I decided to major in History so that I could continue learning about the past. It was during one of my history classes that I had to write a paper on a topic of my choice. Up until then, all of the papers I had written were assigned topics that didn't interest me, so it was refreshing to be able to choose something that I was passionate about.

The paper went well and I ended up getting an A on it. My professor told me that she was impressed with my writing and that I should consider becoming a History major. I was hesitant at first because I wasn't sure if I was good enough, but after giving it some thought, I decided to switch my major. Writing has always been a passion of mine, so it made sense to pursue a career in which I could write every day.

Throughout the rest of my college career, writing became an increasingly important part of my life. In addition to taking more History classes, I also took several English courses and even joined the campus newspaper. By the time I graduated, writing was no longer just a hobby - it was something that I was confident and comfortable doing.

I'm not saying that everyone needs to become a writer, but I do think that everyone can benefit from writing. It doesn't matter what you write about - it could be your thoughts on current events, a story about your childhood, or even just a list of things you need to do. The important thing is that you're putting your thoughts down on paper (or screen) and taking the time to reflect on them.

Writing has definitely made me a better thinker and communicator. It's helped me to organize my thoughts and express myself more clearly. And although it's not always easy, it's something that I'm grateful for. So if you've been thinking about starting a blog or just taking up writing as a hobby, I say go for it! You might be surprised at what you can do.

I've always been interested in history. I love reading about different cultures and times, but I never realized that history is more than just a bunch of events that happened in the past. History is made every day by regular people, just like you and me. And what do regular people do? They write. They keep journals and they write letters to their friends and family. Even if we don't consider ourselves writers, we are all constantly writing something.

But there's something special about taking the time to sit down and really write something. It can be anything from a grocery list to a novel, but when you take the time to put your thoughts into words, it's amazing how much clearer your mind can become. Writing can be therapeutic, helping you to work through your problems and figure out what you're really thinking and feeling. It's a way to communicate your thoughts and feelings without having to speak them out loud, which can be especially helpful if you're not comfortable talking about certain things.

But it's not just personal reflection that writing can help with. In this day and age, we are constantly communicating with others through writing. Whether we're sending an email at work or texting our friends, we are always putting our thoughts into words. And the better we are at writing, the better we will be at communicating our ideas to others. Writing is an essential skill in any profession, and even if you don't consider yourself a writer, improving your writing skills can only benefit you.

So why not give it a try? Pick up a pen and paper (or open up a Word document) and start writing about whatever comes to mind. You might be surprised at how therapeutic it can be, and who knows? Maybe you'll discover a hidden talent for writing in the process. Either way, I think you'll find that writing is an important skill that everyone should learn. Thanks for reading! :)

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to improve this blog post! :) Writing has definitely helped me become more clear-minded and communicate better with others, so I hope it will do the same for you.
