Why Did Janet Jackson Get Cancelled?

Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson is a world-class singer known for her music, dancing and iconic last name. But after one single moment of controversy in 2004, Janet Jackson’s career took a serious turn for the worse, and it had nothing to do with her talents.

In this article, I will explain what happened, why Janet Jackson was “cancelled,” what it did to her career, and present my argument for why Janet Jackson was wrongfully “counciled”.

The Super Bowl Controversy

The primary reason Janet Jackson was “cancelled” can be traced back to the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show. Janet performed with Justin Timberlake, when she experienced a wardrobe malfunction. During the last moments of the show, Justin ripped a piece of Janet’s costume, exposing her breast on live TV in front of over 140 million viewers.

This moment shocked the world and to this day is still one of the biggest media stories of the year. The incident was called a wardrobe malfunction, but many who saw it believed it was done on purpose.

Why Did Janet Jackson Get Cancelled?

Janet Jackson was mostly cancelled at least due to public and media reaction from the Super Bowl incident. Although Janet was not alone in the incident, and Justin Timberlake was also to blame, Janet seemed to get the brunt of the criticism. Here’s how:

1. Blame Was Not Shared Fairly

Because of Janet being blamed for the incident, , Justin Timberlake was a part of it, but he did not face the same consequences.

The blame and accusations were directed at Janet as if she did it on purpose.

2. Media Criticism

Janet was targeted by many television stations, radio stations, news programming, had songs banned from the radio, and MTV, who was CBS’ parent company, stopped airing her music videos.

3. Award Show Fallout

Janet received an invitation rescinded to the Grammy, however Justin Timberlake still received an invitation and the opportunity to win awards.

4. Public Pressure

There was a huge public backlash at the time. Some people thought the program was inappropriate for families. Janet caught up with politicians, every single parents group out there, and media watchdogs. People were demanding her apology, and for punishment.

Because of all this and more that I haven't listed, Janet’s career was basically stuck in neutral. Radio stations stopped playing her music, and album releases were not received the same after the incident. This is what people mean by Janet was "cancelled".

The Role of Race and Gender

A number of fans and critics alike believe that because Janet is a Black woman, she was treated differently due to racism and sexism. Some say if a white artist had done what she did, the reaction would have been completely different.

Justin Timberlake, the white male artist (who was the one that ripped Janet's clothing), did not face any consequences. This sparked conversations about how the media and even the public treat women—particularly women of colour—in these situations.

Did Janet Jackson Deserve to Be Cancelled?

Through the years, many people have changed their positions. Janet Jackson said she never anticipated the incident. Janet apologized multiple times and reiterated it was an accident. Justin Timberlake even said that he should have spoken out about her treatment at the time.

In retrospect, many fans and celebrities believe Janet was treated unfairly. She has had her reputation restored in documentaries and discussions around the internet, and in the last few years, many have remembered Janet Jackson's contributions to music and culture.

Janet Jackson's Comeback

Even though Janet was cancelled, she never gave up. She kept making music, going on tours, and growing her fan base. Her albums “Discipline” and “Unbreakable” showed she still had star power.

In recent years, many fans have apologized on behalf of the public, and Janet is being celebrated again. In 2021, a documentary about her life helped people better understand her struggles and strength.

Conclusion

Janet Jackson was cancelled after a wardrobe malfunction during the 2004 Super Bowl. Even though it was an accident, she faced harsh treatment from the media and public, while her co-performer didn’t.

Many now see it as unfair and believe it was influenced by race and gender. Today, Janet is making a comeback and regaining the respect she always deserved.
