1. Tyler Perry as Terry Brock

Not only did Tyler Perry write, direct and produce the film, he also played the role of Terry Brock, who has a deep love for his wife and tries his best to keep constant peace in their marriage. As a pediatrician married to Diane, a career woman, Terry struggles to balance the love he has for Diane, the patience he gives, and the frustration he feels.

Perry's portrayal was calm and sincere, depicting a man trying to navigate through his love, his core beliefs, and his limited television time. Not only is Perry a filmmaker, he's also versatile enough to be in front of the camera and deliver real and authentic Black stories.

2. Janet Jackson as Patricia Agnew

Janet Jackson played Patricia, who is a success, as a psychologist, author, and wife who appears to have a perfect marriage. Unbeknownst to everyone, Patricia has deep-seeded pain and unresolved life issues.

Jackson's calm but hidden performance delivered an emotional roller-coaster. Known mostly around the world for her music, Janet was able to show the audience that she could deliver as strongly in front of the screen.

3. Jill Scott as Sheila

Jill Scott's performance of Sheila may have been the most remarkable performance in the film genre of drama. The character Sheila is a good person. She is loyal and good-hearted but struggles with being overweight.

Sheila is often victimized by an emotionally unsupportive husband, Mike. Jill made Sheila a very warm, vulnerable and strong character. Sheila was arguably the most sympathetic character in the movie.

The fact that Jill presented Sheila physically and emotionally danceable into someone embracing self-love and self-esteem was very special to fans.

4. Malik Yoba as Gavin Agnew

Malik Yoba played Gavin, Patricia's husband. Gavin was characterized by the role Malik played and gave credibility to the struggles men have with the dynamics of being married to women where emotional distance is apparent.

Malik's performance set the film in a more serious dynamic, especially when evaluating the gravity of grief after a tragedy engages deterioration in communication. Gavin's character was an important lens to show that success has zero to do with the measure of happiness, or the lack of in a relationship.

5. Sharon Leal as Diane Brock

Sharon Leal played the character of Diane, Terry’s partner, who is torn between her career and marriage. She often plays a character who is still a bit detached and is so focused on work that it creates tension on the home front.

Sharon played a realistic character of woman who is trying to do it in all, but in the process is slowly losing sight of what really matters. Her character epitomizes many of the real life struggles women professionals experience in their marriages.

6. Richard T. Jones as Mike

Richard T. Jones played Mike, Sheila’s insensitive and, at times, cruel husband. He became many people's least favorite character due to his rude comments and cheating character.

Jones character's portrayal was effective that many viewers truly felt anger and frustration at his character. His character was also a turning point for Sheila in her character transformation and allowed for real conversations about toxic relationship to be had.

7. Tasha Smith as Angela

Tasha Smith contributed electricity and attitude to her role as Angela, the boisterous wife of Marcus. Angela was loud, confrontational, and brutally honest. Her scenes brought humor and drama to the movie.

Smith’s performance was courageous, and audiences loved the way she could say exactly what was on her mind but also portray vulnerability at the same time. Angela’s character taught audiences about trust and the consequences of connecting poorly with loved ones.

8. Michael Jai White as Marcus

Michael Jai White played Marcus, Angela’s husband and a former football player. The character Marcus attempted to remain composed while managing Angela’s strong personality, and Michael used a subtle strength and comedic timing to portray this character.

While Marcus was flawed, he was trying to become a better man, and the character development brought some balance to the fiery energy of their marriage.
