Your Organization's Boots on the Ground

Security guards can be utilized in various situations, differing greatly from situation to situation. Guards can be used to guard people, property, and merchandise. Therefore, there are typically different types of guards available, specializing in different types of guard duties ranging from construction sites to personal security detail.

No matter what type of situation a guard is hired to protect, typically the duties and roles will be relatively the same. It is important to understand the critical roles and responsibilities security guards are accountable for.

Foremostly, all guards are employed for the purpose of the prevention of illegal or criminal acts. They function to protect both assets, property, and people no matter the location. Security guards may protect a construction site against vandals who seek to damage property or steal tools, while a guard working for a retail store seeks to protect customers, employees, and merchandise from theft and harm from criminals.

Furthermore, protection and preventative efforts against criminal activity will be tailored to the wishes of the company hiring the guard’s services. In some instances, guards will be responsible for knowing the area and preparing strategies for the monitoring and protection of people/assets in advance of an important event. In such cases, it is crucial the guard be aware of entrances and exits, as well as other unique features of the venue and premises as to be aptly prepared for the event. This also ensures the event will run smoothly and security will not be compromised.

Guards must be constantly alert to people who may cause trouble. Being aware of body language and subtle indications of criminal intent will be important in keeping an eye on people and preventing trouble from occurring.

Additionally, the very presence of a security guard is a vital part of the job, as merely being seen by people can discourage them from engaging in criminal behavior. The mere presence of a guard functions as a preventative measure against vandalism, theft, or harm perpetrated against other people. This phenomenon works well in preventing criminal activity against a property, but also has the same effect in deterring criminals from attacking people protected by their own personal guard. Criminals do not want to cause a scene or face arrest; thus, the presence of a guard makes perpetrators think twice before engaging in harm to property or people.

Guards do much more than just deter criminals, but also are the first line of defense when criminal incidents occur. They are responsible for mitigating emergency situations occurring while they are on duty. This often means contacting authorities and holding persons accused of criminal activity until police arrives.

Therefore, guards must be competently trained to ensure they handle things legally and professionally no matter the situation. It is particularly important that they are familiar with the laws of the state as to ensure they respect the rights of the apprehended person.

Security guards represent the business they work for and are a reflection upon the business. Thus, it is important that they can collaborate in a professional manner with law enforcement, employees, and customers.

These responsibilities and roles are essential parts of being a competent and helpful security presence. Hence, it is of upmost importance that security companies prioritize extensive training for their guards to ensure they can provide quality service no matter the situation they face.
