When you are headed off to vacation, there are many different priorities you may consider. You may want to relax, see many sights, or eat at great restaurants. Many people time even time their vacations to enjoy certain weather conditions. Wildlife is a common interest of tourists, as well. With conservation efforts at an all-time high around the globe, you can easily find a place to get up close with your favorite animal. There a few wildlife sanctuaries, however, that stand out among the rest.

Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are home to an abundance of wildlife. Throughout the islands you can find large amounts of marine animals. There are three dedicated breeding programs for tortoises on the islands. These are geared towards helping hatchlings survive from 2-5 years. Currently, they are less susceptible to the wild environment and invasive species that act as predators. Look into visiting the Isabela Tortoise Center, the Santa Cruz Tortoise Center, and the San Cristobal Tortoise Center. All locations have remarkable numbers of hatchlings on an annual basis.

The Santa Cruz Tortoise Center is credited with restoring the population after it dwindled to dangerously low numbers around the year 1965. Black rats brought in from other countries during the 1800’s used the animals as a food source, leaving less than 200 adult tortoises in Pinzon and a mere 14 tortoises on Espanola Island. The research center has accomplished restoration on Floreana Island, as well. There was a complete extinction in the area over 200 years ago.

South Africa

Everyone seems to think of Africa when they imagine large amounts of free roaming wild animals. The luxurious landscape of this exotic location has changed a lot over the years. Poachers have become a huge problem for conservationists, as well. The SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary got its start from one woman with a fierce determination to save the native species.

The sanctuary covers approximately 6,000 hectares and can be visited with proper reservations. Prepare to eat vegan while you enjoy viewing endangered animals such as hippos, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and the blue wildebeest. These are only a few of the many animals inhabiting this wildlife reserve, however. Africa is home to an incredibly diverse animal population and this sanctuary is doing everything they can to ensure it stays this way.

China

China makes headlines for its extreme amount of exports and overpopulation; however, it is home to some very specific animals. China is aware of the importance of saving these species and has made great efforts to do so. The China Bear Rescue Center is not as easy to access as other rescue sites, however. There are open viewing days only twice a month, so it is recommenced that you plan other activities if you make the trip. There are specified areas built into the reserve to allow visitors to be up close to the bears in a safe way.

The main goal of this sanctuary is to help animals live as naturally as possible while remaining under protection. This and other bear sanctuaries in Asia were started in response to the inhumane bear bile farming practices. The environment is described as semi-natural, as it must be altered to allow for ongoing conservation efforts and human interaction. There are top facilities for vet care and rehabilitation, as well as the wild, protected area for those that recover well. Money spent visiting the sanctuary also helps support local employment at the facility.

United Kingdom

If smaller animals are more your style, head to Tiggywinkles in Haddenham, England. This sanctuary focuses on helping injured animals such as badgers, birds, and hedgehogs. Visitors can get up close to the animals by participating in feedings. You can enjoy your day at the center by relaxing with a picnic lunch or eating at the café. There are plenty of learning opportunities, including an assortment of animal bones. Their website offers detailed information on what to do if you find an ill or injured animal, as well. They make efforts to get everyone involved in animal rescue and encourage visitation from all age groups.

Australia

A trip to Australia would hardly be worth the trouble without the opportunity to see some Koala bears. In other parts of the world, these are rarely seen outside of a zoo environment. The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane, Australia works hard to keep these animals in a natural environment. This sanctuary can lay claim to being both the larges and the longest standing koala reserve. It has been around since 1927 and offers many interactive opportunities. There are several animals that call this reserve home. you can experience them up close when you sign up to feed a kangaroo or hold a koala.

There are many opportunities around the globe that offer a glimpse at wildlife conservations. Many of these sanctuaries work around the clock to care for sick and injured animals. You are sure to combine education with enjoyment when you venture to one of these famous areas. Take the time to plan, however, as some have strict restrictions on visiting times. This is a great way to support animal conservation while also enjoying a holiday. It is an amazing feeling to be a part of saving some of the earth’s most precious creatures.
