The River Ran Backwards

Fantasy

By LE HONG LAMPublished about a year ago 3 min read

The river ran backwards on the day the Queen vanished. It was as if the great Saebris, whose waters were as old as the roots of the mountains, had reversed time itself. The people of Eldoria gathered along its banks, eyes wide with confusion and fear as the current defied nature and surged upstream, carrying petals of silver lilies and fragments of lost whispers. It was said that such an event marked the unraveling of destiny, a warning whispered only in the deepest tomes of the ancient loremasters.

In the heart of the city, beyond the marble archways and gilded spires of the royal palace, the Court of Shadows convened. Seven robed figures stood in silence around a circular table of obsidian, their faces obscured by the hoods of their ceremonial cloaks. At the center of the table, an orb glowed with a sullen, blue light, pulsating in time with the erratic beat of the river outside.

"Is it true?" rasped Lord Eredin, the eldest among them, his voice as cracked as the scrolls he cherished. His eyes, glistening with an unsettling light, darted across the faces of his peers.

Lady Naeris, whose cunning had kept the realm on the brink of mystery for decades, nodded solemnly. "The Veil has been breached. The Queen has passed beyond the realm of sight and sound." Her voice was steady, but her knuckles whitened as she gripped the edge of the table.

A sharp intake of breath came from Joran, the youngest member of the council, barely more than a boy. He had studied tales of the Queen's power but had never imagined a day when Eldoria would be without her.

"Can she be brought back?" Joran asked, his voice tremulous, daring hope to enter a room suffused with shadows.

Lord Eredin's gaze softened for a moment before hardening once more. "Not without the Heart of Thalmos," he said. A silence as deep as the winter sea fell over them. The Heart of Thalmos was a fabled gem said to hold the essence of the First Song, a melody spun by the gods when the world was still young and bound by magic. It had been lost centuries before, hidden in the Cursed Forest of Virindel, where even light feared to tread.

As the day waned and twilight cast its long, purple shadows over Eldoria, a figure cloaked in simple wool entered the outer gates of the palace. It was Alaric, the royal ranger and the Queen’s trusted companion. His eyes, keen as a hawk's, were weary, bearing the brunt of days spent scouring the borders of the known world. He carried news that made the bravest of hearts falter.

"The forest stirs," he said, addressing the gathering throng of nobles and scholars alike. "The wraiths have awoken, and they whisper the Queen's name."

Gasps and murmurs rippled through the crowd, but Alaric's gaze settled on the Court of Shadows as he spoke his next words with a grim finality. "If we do not find the Heart, the Queen will be lost beyond the Veil, and with her, Eldoria's hope."

That night, as the river continued its backward march and the stars blinked uncertainly in the sky, Alaric prepared for the journey into Virindel, his heart heavy with the weight of an entire kingdom’s fate. In the dark corners of the city, old prophecies came alive on whispered tongues, telling of the return of a forgotten age where magic ruled not only the land but the very will of men.

And so, under the pale glow of a crescent moon, Eldoria's last, desperate quest began—into the heart of a forest where no path was true, and the only guide was the song of a gem lost to time.
