Is self publishing worth it?
I have been self publishing novels since 2017. It has been a wild ride and I'm still struggling to get the recognition I want, book sales are hard to get when you're a one man act who has to do the editing, promoting and cover design all by yourself. Admittedly I thought self publishing my first novel would be truly life changing, where I would become a full time author, but you'll learn quickly that it's very difficult to get a big hit, especially if you're only independent. I have sold a lot of books, although having a regular job is still the way to go if you need regular income. At first; being self published means you'll only make a small amount of money, which is nice to have some extra cash, but if you're doing it solely for profit, you may be disappointed. Which is why I suggest you should look into self publishing mostly for the passion of storytelling rather than making money. With all that said, I love being a self published author as writing can be a very fun and exciting hobby for me personally. If you're itching to tell good stories and you want to share them with the world, then you should definitely look into it. I've sold books worldwide in countries like American, England, Australia and even Canada. Yet I may only make £20 a month if I am lucky. Just because I haven't been very successful, doesn't mean you won't be. Although being traditional published is the best way to make it as a author, being independent gives you a lot more freedom to write anything you desire, no matter how strange or personal your ideas may be.
