A Small Moment Battle
It is always hard to believe how a destructive event can open an unexpected path in life. To this day, I am grateful it occurred because I may not be sitting here in front of my iPad, recalling the events of that year in the 90s. It all began with a knock on the door, one month before my senior year began.

0'Dark-Thirty
I rolled over and looked at my clock– 1:55 am. After counting at least five-thousand-six-hundred-fifty-five sheep, I still couldn't drift into dreamland. “Those sheep are worthless,” I thought. It wasn’t their fault though. I had been laying in the dark for a while waiting for my alarm to go off. I was afraid I’d sleep through it, miss my car service, and in turn my flight home…well, not home per se, but back to Colorado. With only five minutes before it would blare an obnoxious beep, I decided to drag myself out of bed. I got dressed and downed a cup of hot tea, willing the caffeine to resuscitate my sluggish brain. Awakening at the Museum
Once again, I was being bullied by my peers on a field trip standing in front of the space exhibit at the science and history museum. I was thirteen years old and had been bullied since the start of elementary school by the same damn kids. They always called me the same horrible names, they always pushed me around and they always played the same cruel pranks, like continually pushing me into a teacher and telling them that it was all my fault. It was a never ending story of dread and despair and it was not something I wanted to be familiar with. I just wished I knew how to make it stop.

Passing Ship
I perceive life as a sea and I as a ship sailing through both charted and uncharted waters. When it comes to passing ships, I have a few I will never forget, several I wish to lock away in a chest and lose in the sea, many that I would probably not recognize if I happened to encounter again but one that has grown on me. One small ship that has become something inked in my heart and soul.

DEI Best Practices for Board of Directors (part 1)
In recent years, DEI initiatives have transformed from “nice-to-have” into “must-have” elements of an organization’s strategy, and this positive progress cannot be overemphasized. But although DEI initiatives require support from all levels of an organization, boards of directors may be uncertain about how to become involved in DEI, especially as many may not see themselves as directly linked to these initiatives. Fortunately, there is one linkage that facilitates extensive opportunities for boards of directors to support DEI: the connection between a board of directors and their CEO.
