I, Animator

Youth Development
Almost two decades ago I started working in the youth development field as a counselor during the summer. I worked with school aged youth in Caton Park. I never knew it would become a career I was passionate about. Growing up in a house full of kids and being the older one, I had to assume responsibility over my younger family members. Because of my upbringing, being in this field felt right. As I progressed I began to love it more and more. However, the more passionate I became the more obstacles I faced. It became painfully obvious, after a few years of working in this field, that it was business as usual. Numbers to show funders were more important than the efficiency of the work being done. The politics of business had invaded a field founded on empathy and advocacy.

Jobs. We all need them. While the job market is difficult and scary, finally landing that new job can be just as frightening. What do I do? What if I don’t like it? I have to wake up early? The list of fears can stretch for miles. It did for me, and I’ve been out of college doing job applications forever. When starting this journey, I was led to believe that assisting a family was at the crux of the job I had been asked to do. Acting as an intermediary was an acceptable responsibility for me, as this is something I have done on many separate occasions whether it be through teaching or journalism. When asked to do this in a fair and just manner, I have no problems with this line of work, especially when it comes to the journalistic side of things. I have been transparent with my motivation for writing anything, only allowing my judgment calls to be based on my personal comfort levels. The integrity of those I may be working for or with would be the main reason to potentially alter anything along the way.

Have you ever become interested in an area where you will become all-consumed? You end up investing a lot of time, energy and money in your new pursuit(s). You develop a passion and a good level of competency. Then, boredom hits you. You slowly lose interest in the projects that you were once so devoted to. You try to resist, but it becomes increasingly harder, and in the end, you “give up.” Then another area of interest catches your attention and you dive in with the same vigorous passion until you once again become disinterested. It becomes a cycle of multiple pursuits which eventually end up being abandoned for something new.

Life as a Bad Guy
“I wore a fucking sweater!” I’m laughing cause, ya know, it’s damn funny! Laughing in spite of the whole thing and somewhat surprised I guess. And also, maybe possibly, sorta, sub-consciously angry, on the inside, not angry I guess, but hurt. I’m butt-hurt. But that’s pretty deep down. That won’t come up 'til later. In a hotel room in Faribault, Minnesota after some good ol’ boys in the lobby tell me they’re surprised I speak “such good English.” Nope, those feelings are being held up at gunpoint and told to lay on the floor and count to 1,000. Damn... that’s just what they said I’d do!

The CNA Life
A certified nursing assistant or CNA as they're known. They are the eyes and ears of the medical field. They are also a culture within itself where you're not treated right, nor are you respected. Also many don't really see that the majority of CNAs are in fact African-American, Filipino, and Hispanic. Which shows that few whites work this kind of job, and if they do they're older. Nowadays it's not unusual to see a lot of young girls between 20-40 working this type of job.
