Sheinelle Jones’ husband of 17 years, Uche Ojeh, has died after a battle with brain cancer. He was 45 years old.
“It is with deep sadness that we share that Uche Ojeh, wife of friend and TODAY host Sheinelle Jones, has passed away after a courageous battle with aggressive glioblastoma brain cancer,” Savannah Guthrie said on May 23.
"There are no words to express the pain I feel for Sheinelle and our three young children. Her husband was an amazing man. We all loved him. So I wanted to take a moment to tell you about the man who was Sheinelle's best friend throughout her life."
Sheinelle and Uche began their relationship at Northwestern University in the late 1990s, when Sheinelle, then an 18-year-old college student, chose to introduce herself to a faculty member near Chicago. They were together for eight years before Uche proposed at the same high school.
They were married in September 2007 in Sheinelle’s hometown of Philadelphia and welcomed their first son, Cain, in August 2009. Their two children, son Uche and daughter Clara, arrived 201 years later.
For Uche, her family, friends and deep faith are the driving forces. She was deeply committed to her Nigerian culture and instilled in her children a deep connection to those traditions. She was an avid soccer player and sang in her church choir.
“One thing I always talk about — I talk about those kids,” Craig Melvin said today. “He loved that kid more than anything in this world and he was so proud of him. He was his dad on the sidelines at every soccer game. He was at every concert, at every gig. He was that guy and they had this beautiful story of love.”
The greatness that Sheinelle and Uche do together is reflected in their small events and triumphant celebrations of love, big and small. Two years ago, when Sheinelle ran the New York City Marathon for the first time, Uche was there at the finish line to proudly cheer her on. Sheinelle showed the same dedication and enthusiasm when Uche finished his race a few weeks ago.
The TODAY family honors the life of Uche, a devoted husband, loving father, and a man whose warm heart touched all who knew him.
Who is Shinelle Jones' husband, Ochi Oya?
During a February 2016 episode of "Today," Shinelle explained how she first met her husband in a "subversive way." The journalist was a student at Northwestern University when Ochi, then in high school, visited the school for a field trip. He and his father disappeared from campus when they stopped to ask Shinelle to leave.
The NBC personality gave her future husband a tour of the campus after getting to know each other. Shinelle and Ochi, who were 18 and 17 at the time, began dating after their first meeting. They would each graduate and start their own careers. Ochi worked as a technology consultant out of college before joining UAO Consulting.
Shinelle continued to discuss her relationship with the businessman on social media after their 2007 divorce in Philadelphia. The couple celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary in November 2022.
In September 2023, Shane posted a birthday tribute to her husband that shocked her fans.
"Happy Birthday Ochi. - It's amazing how life works sometimes... I was born in Philly... I moved as a child... I visited my dad every summer after my parents split... But I never thought it would be one of the best years of my life, being in Philly for 3 years and my career in the hospital where we were for another 1!" she captioned a series of photos from her wedding day.
Did Chanel Jones and Ozzy Ozzy have any children?
Chanel and Ozzy have a beautiful family of five! They first became parents in August 2009 when she gave birth to their oldest child, son Kane. Three years later, the Pennsylvania native and entrepreneur welcomed twins, son Ozzy and daughter Clara.
While Chanel absolutely loves spending time with her kids and husband, she admits that the amount of phone calls she gets in a day definitely affects her sleep.
“I try to stay up past 8 p.m.,” she explained in a January 2021 interview with Parents. “My husband wouldn’t let me watch movies on Friday nights for a while. He’d watch me and I’d fall asleep! Most of the time, I’d go to bed before my kids.”
But, the average journalist wouldn’t trade their career or their family for the world. Chenille thinks she and O'Shea might have three newsrooms in the future.
"I remember my mother telling me not to talk so much, and now, after three kids, I'm like myself!" she said. The good news is, maybe they can make a career out of it, like their mother did.
