“You write resumes?!” Pure astonishment shines from the faces of a good 75% of people when I tell them what I do with my time.

“I didn’t know that was a thing!”

Yes, resume writers are a thing now.

But why, you may wonder, would you want to pay your hard earned money for a stranger to write your resume? Doesn’t that seem counter intuitive?

Well, you’ve asked the right girl. I'm one of those fabled professional resume writers.

Stay tuned for the top five reasons you should probably hire a resume writer…

Writing gives you nightmares.

Whether you struggle with writing (in spite of your strengths in many other areas) or you just dislike writing, a resume writer saves you from facing that keyboard and Word document any longer than you have to.

I have seen so many resumes come in from clients who have real accomplishments, skills, and strengths that would make them great candidates, but whose resumes contain unfortunate composition-oriented errors. These types know their strength isn’t writing and they need help expressing their very real achievements and skill sets in writing. A resume writer takes the rough beginning and creates a tool that showcases a client’s true background and potential.

What works - and doesn’t work - changes with time.

The job hunt has changed. Employers often use ATS software to pre-screen resumes before a human ever takes a look. Many internet job postings receive over 100 applications, making it difficult to stand out. Professional formatting, buzzwords and keywords, and writing style change over time.

Your job is to be great at what you do. A resume writer’s job is to be great at what they do. That’s why resume writers take time to stay on top of trends that impact resumes and hiring. A resume writer’s job is to not only write well, but to write in the format, style, and tone that are effective and considered professional right now. They make sure they know and include the buzzwords and keywords necessary to strengthen your resume and get it past the ATS pre-screens.

You feel awkward bragging on yourself.

Resumes are the one place you are supposed to toot your own horn, but that often feels weird to do. And for that matter, what exactly are you supposed to toot your horn about? You might think something is noteworthy, but does anyone else agree?

That’s where a resume writer can help. Resume writing is often about looking for the good in people and in their experiences and figuring out how to strategically (and honestly) highlight it. A resume writer brings an objective eye to your experience and does the bragging for you - both providing an external assessment of your accomplishments and a scapegoat so you don’t have to feel awkward about talking yourself up.

Your background is complicated.

Career transitions from one industry to another, changing career lanes half way through your professional life, or an employment gap? Those are real challenges job seekers deal with and that they are often unsure how to address and frame in a resume and cover letter.

A good resume writer will help you frame your experience and your goals in a positive way, minimizing problems, highlighting transferable skills, and formatting your experience in a way that doesn’t raise red flags.

Poof. There went your worries.

You aren’t getting interviews.

I’ll be honest, there is a possibility that you aren’t qualified for what you are applying for. But there is a much bigger chance that the reason you aren’t getting hits back on your applications is that your resume isn’t measuring up for some reason.

Its missing keywords and failing at the ATS point. Its formatted unprofessionally and employers think you are out of touch or naive. It is missing key content or it gives TMI. It sounds arrogant or lacks confidence.

There are a myriad of reasons your resume could be your downfall.

If you’ve given it your best shot, and are not getting much in return, a resume writer may be able to give your resume the make over it needs, opening new doors in your job search.

(Bonus) You don’t have time.

You probably thought I missed the reason staring us both in the face. I didn’t.

You should probably hire a resume writer because your time is valuable and you have better and more exciting things to do than spend hours on your resume when you could be doing literally anything else.

Job searching is tough, but getting a good resume doesn’t have to be.

And that's why people hire resume writers.
