When I unleashed my true femininity in the music world, I knew there would be a possibility of failure. I understood that image involved wealth. After careful examination of songwriting, I decided to name and title my first self written mixtape, “I’m Just a Poor Dame ''. The mixtape title, “I’m Just a Poor Dame '' carries many meanings. Of course the title concludes that I am a struggling writer, but the title extends far beyond that. The title is a form of empowerment for a famous female hip hop artist, whom we take for granted every single day. The beauty and body maintenance of these iconic stars are far beyond our understanding and comprehension. My mixtape title reinforces appreciation for female hip hop rappers, who agree to stand strong in a male dominated hip hop world. Not only does my mixtape title, ‘I’m Just a Poor Dame' conclude struggle, it also concludes that my understanding of survival as a female hip hop artist, is very minimal. My mixtape concludes my innocence, concerning the lack of understanding, knowledge, strength and extreme creativity that makes these women the “chosen ones' ', in a female hip hop world.
When I first pursued my songwriting, I offered it to several social media platforms, such as Facebook and YouTube. Though I received some likes and views, the response was very minimal. I worked hard to reach audiences with many of my self written hip hop tracks. I wanted my listeners to understand a different perspective of females in the hip hop industry. My first self written music track called ”Plaid T-shirt” was a depiction of the soap opera era during the 90’s. My music track Plaid T-shirt depicts romantic love making scenes at night and reinforces feminine gender roles regard morning rises after sex. The music track illustrates a visual image of a feminine state of lovemaking and the female arising from a night of intimacy. As she awakes she reaches for her boyfriend’s button down plaid t-shirt and puts it on. Shortly after she enters the penthouse living room, grabs a cup of coffee, takes a deep breath and sits near the fireplace. This song reached the social media platform but was unsuccessful.
My next self-written track called “More Fun in Milan” illustrates the career of a model who ended her modeling career, gained a small amount of weight, and still enjoys runway festivities and fun in Milan.
My self written track called “Body Body” is a mixture of hardcore hip hop and feminity. The track speaks about a thug at a party who needs love too.
My latest track called “Cotton Candy Icy”, is about a girl who wants a west coast and a Florida lifestyle but lives in New York.
Although social media platforms have offered many opportunities for growth, songwriters and musicians are often unsuccessful.
During my time as a songwriter, I have looked to social media outlets for reassurance and continuance of my hobby. Unfortunately, my success remains limited. During the first year of songwriting I uploaded my music to a music portal platform called songcast. For the first two years I made approximately .18 cents. Years later social media facebook story additions have earned me approximately $2.00 in about 6months. Since facebook story and Tik Tok have emerged, my musical audience has increased rapidly. Although my career is still very unsuccessful, the chance for success is somewhat possible in the future. With facebook stories and music performance companies such as Indie on the move, the chance for success is still very much achievable. I hope that these platforms offer more success for me as a music writer. But until then, I will remain just a poor dame.
