Passion For Writing
Discovering my love of writing
Everybody has their passion in life. For me, that's writing.
My journey into the love of writing began when I was about fifteen. I took a creative writing course in high-school, and the tasks consisted of writing poetry and short stories. While some people may find it boring, I found it fascinating. It was remarkable how I can use my thoughts to come up with unique stories.
Aside from being creative, writing also served as a form of relaxation to me. My teen years were a bit difficult dealing with my parents divorce, plus feeling like I didn't fit in. Writing allowed me to unwind and escape from the stress of life.
I loved writing so much that I decided to make it my life's calling. Twenty years later, it remains an important part of who I am.
Writing is a huge aspect of my career. I'm a published author with 10 books under my belt along with several short stories. Romance is the genre I write, but I have dabbled in the world of horror and mystery. I never imagined I’d be writing books. Then one day out of the blue, the story idea hit me and I decided to pursue it.
Like many authors out there, I chose to go the self-publishing route. I’m responsible for writing, editing, and designing the cover of my own book; then uploading the finished product to Amazon and other book sellers. Self-publishing is great because I have full creative control. Yet, it also has its drawbacks.
I'd like to say my career as an indie author has been a success, but let's say I'm not rolling in the millions. I'm lucky to be able to get one book sale.
Although sales are dismal, I continue writing my stories. Why? Well, for one thing, it's what I love to do. Second, I believe in the adage of "never give up." Many famous writers were rejected before they hit it big. So you never know when or if your big break is going to come.
As long as I continue to have ideas forming, I'll continue to write.
Aside from books, I also work as a freelance writer. I've worked with several sites throughout the years, my main topics I'm knowledgeable in are sports and entertainment. However, there are times I have to step out of my comfort zone for a certain assignment.
It's difficult having your work judged. After I submit an article, I anxiously await to see if it's been rejected or accepted. When it’s accepted, I’m thrilled not only because it means money, but also that someone liked my work.
My writing may not be the best, in fact all writers will tell you they make mistakes with the occasional typo and grammar error. I accept any advice I can receive from editors to improve. These tips have helped greatly over the years, and it boosts my self confidence when an editor or a client applauds me on my writing.
Aside from earning me a steady income, writing also helps relieve tension. As I mentioned earlier, it's been a great form of relaxation in dealing with stress. I'm not the type of person who tends to keep things bottled up. I never felt comfortable sharing my problems with others, but writing in my journal allows me to get everything in the open. I can share my feelings without feeling judged, and I know my secrets will be kept safe in my diary.
I've rambled on long enough, but I wanted to share how I discovered my passion for writing and the role it plays in my life.
