Networking vs Outside Solicitation

Networking v Outside Solicitation

By Lynne BlackPublished 4 months ago 3 min read

Indeed, there is a difference between networking vs outside solicitation. Although many people think these are both the same, there are key differences between the two.

Networking vs Outside Solicitation

When it comes to networking, it is about creating genuine connections with others to learn from each other.

First and foremost, it is important to build relationships. For instance, if you are part of a program, you have the opportunity to chat with others about their experience.

Outside solicitation happens online and at events. For example, many individuals reach out to individuals to pitch their service. Although their services may be valuable, how they go about it often leaves a bad impression.

Build Connections Through Networking

When you are looking to grow your network, keep in mind that it is essential to show genuine interest in the person you want to meet. For instance, ask someone a question such as what brought them to the event.

In addition, you should first learn what someone does before you mention what you do. By learning a little bit about what someone does, you can plant a seed. For example, mention something you recently accomplished.

Don’t talk yourself up! Instead, engage in a conversation about something you did and ask the person you are speaking to their thoughts.

Below are some recommendations I have to build your network.

Build a relationship.

Create credibility within your industry.

Engage in conversations to learn about other people’s roles.

Expand your professional circle

Long-term business relationships take time to cultivate.

Once you build your inner professional circle, you can plant a seed for a future collaboration.

People are Annoyed by Outside Solicitation

Have you been approached by someone who promotes their service or products without any genuine connection? Well, I have, and I find it annoying.

In my opinion, the number of requests I receive many times a week disrupts the things I value, such as collaboration and trust. Meanwhile, the majority of requests I receive are one-sided. I have found many people reaching out to me on various social platforms, having no idea what I do. Although their service or product may be valuable, the way they go about it is inconsiderate and unprofessional.

So, if you find yourself being pursued by others, be direct. At the same time, use clear language to let the person know you are not interested.

When you say no politely, you are setting firm boundaries. I often thank someone for reaching out to me, but I let them know I am all set. By ending the communication quickly, I am able to quickly end their attempt to sell me something.

Finally, if someone doesn’t accept your professional rejection and continues to be persistent, you can block the sender.

What to Know About Networking vs Outside Solicitation

One of the key differences between the two is that networking is about building mutually beneficial connections. Outside solicitation is one-sided. For example, is someone reaching out to you to sell you a product or service without any relationship?

Hence, if you receive a request to connect with someone you don’t know, what should you do? Though some requests you may receive to connect may be genuine, how many of them pitch a product or service to you?

For instance, over the last several years, I have received many requests from individuals whom I don’t know. At the same time, I have found many of the messages I receive haven’t really looked at my profile or website.

So, next time you receive a request to connect, ask the person why they want to connect. Also, asking someone what prompted them to reach out helps you filter a legitimate connection or a scammer.

Networking Ideas

Of course, networking can play an important role for professionals to meet people in their community.

Moreover, the best way to network is to participate in a seminar, themed event, or workshop. Additionally, many virtual events are being offered.
