Medium is Dying

Medium is dying, it's no longer a viable place to earn money online in my opinion (It's still possible though but you must use specific strategies)

I used to be such a big fan of Medium and I promoted it to everyone, but now, Medium is dying a slow and painful death. It’s sad, but that’s the truth.

It reminds me of the good old days when I made $4000 a week or more on Demand Media. The platform that houses Livestrong and other webites, but now Demand Media no longer exists and these publications are owned by a different entity.

This is what I say when it comes to making money online, don’t get too comfortable. Don’t get too excited about making big money on certain platforms because the dream can come crashing down at any given time.

This is why I say you must have multiple streams of income. You can’t rely on one income stream as an online writer, blogger, content creator, or any online business for that matter. You must build several income streams and never get too happy in one place.

Right now, Medium is dying. I went from earning thousands on there to earning pennies per article.

So for example, one artcle that earned more than $1000, that same article, I republished it, and I haven’t even earned $100 from this article. I’m not doing anything different either, I published the piece, shared it on several platforms as I usually do, and spend at least two hours a day engaging with other writers.

Sadly, I’m not earning $1000 a month on there anymore, not even $300 a month. I’m working tirelessly on there but it’s not worth my time anymore. So I’m focusing on building my blogs, YouTube, digital products, and software engineering. I can’t put all my energy into Medium anymore, and I don’t recommend that anyone else does either.

Here’s what I recommend right now if you’re Medium account is failing:

Write less

Don’t write more, this doesn’t work anymore. Publish less, and spend more time engaging. Spend additional time creating YouTube videos and repurposing your content instead of putting all your eggs into one basket.

Start a YouTube channel

I know, starting a YouTube channel is annoying and long winded. It takes so much time to get it started but honestly, it’s worth it.

What I’d suggest is that you repurpose your Medium content and create videos using the articles you’ve already published. Sometimes I don’t even show my face, I just read the article as an audio piece and shoot some b-roll without showing my face.

Pull your fans out of Medium

If you don’t have a newsletter alreaedy, create one. I recommend that you pull your fans out of Medium completely and start promoting your newsletter. You’re not allowed to promote anything on Medium anymore so, here’s how I do it:

I export my Medium subscribers out of Medium and contact them outside the platform.

Use Your Medium account as a portfolio to get freelance contracts

Get freelance contracts by using your Medium articles as a portfolio. Search for work on Upwork, Freelancer, Contra, LinkedIn and other platforms.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, it's clear that Medium is no longer the reliable platform it once was for generating substantial income. While it may still serve some purpose as a portfolio or for limited exposure, relying solely on it for income is no longer viable. The landscape of online content creation is always shifting, and platforms rise and fall. What was once a goldmine can quickly turn into a time sink.

The key to long-term success is diversification. Build multiple income streams, repurpose your content across various platforms, and most importantly, don’t get too comfortable. Whether it’s starting a YouTube channel, building your own blogs, or pulling your audience off Medium and into your own email list, you have to stay adaptable and always look ahead. Medium may be dying, but your opportunities online don’t have to. Keep evolving, and success will follow.

I make most of my my money from writing content based on articles I find on Google News and curated content. If you'd like to learn about curated content, please gain access to my training here. Also, to my Google News coaching here.

Thanks for this piece. I have 200 stories on the platform and I have just earned $20 in 1 month. All the stories I posted before I joined the partner programs are not earning.
