Manmohan Singh would be remembered most as the economist-statesman and the 13th Prime Minister of India, for the crucial role he played in the cross-sectional view of the nation's economy and the measure of leadership through which he steered the administration during crucial years for the country.

Career Highlights

Manmohan Singh was born in Gah which is present-day Punjab in Pakistan. He studied at Panjab University, Cambridge, and Oxford, where he got his DPhil in economics. He was more high-flying academically than anybody else and might even then have cut it as a teacher had he not strode into public life. Some notable positions held by Singh included Chief Economic Adviser, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

Manmohan Singh came into office at the top of his profession while he became the Finance Minister of the country, at the time when the economy was experiencing one of the worst meltdowns. The resignation of Chandrashekhar after a short stint was also a deciding factor. Innovative liberalizations in trade, the devaluation of the rupee, the dismantling of the License Raj systems-all these have enabled India to evolve from an insular economy into one fully integrated with the world markets. His policies are going to make him a catalyst for decades to come, thus qualifying him to be the father of economic liberalization in India.

Tenure as Prime Minister (2004 – 2014)

Manmohan Singh was interested in being prime minister of a coalition government where he himself laid great emphasis on inclusive growth and social welfare. Some very important policies were enacted during his tenure such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), an act which guarantees employment for rural households, and the Right to Information Act. Singh performed one of the most important roles in foreign policy on the history.

Manmohan Singh died 26 December 2024 aged 92. He will always be remembered for his great legacy. His death marked the end of the end of an era for Indian politics and economics' thought. All quarters of the world joined to pay tributes toward Indian growth and stability he contributed toward his people.

Manmohan Singh's life was a testament to quiet determination and intellectual rigor in bringing meaningful change. For his enduring impact on India's progress, he shall remain a shining inspiration to leaders, economists, and citizens alike.
