Finding Safety In God
Living in the Strong Tower: Finding Safety in God
"The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe."
— Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)
In ancient times, cities often built tall, fortified towers as watchpoints and places of defense. In moments of attack or danger, people would run into these towers for safety. They symbolized strength, protection, and stability. The writer of Proverbs uses this imagery to illustrate the spiritual refuge we find in God.
1. The Strong Tower: God’s Unshakable Nature
The “name of the Lord” represents His character, authority, and power. In biblical times, a name was not just a label—it reflected the essence of a person. To run to the name of the Lord is to place our confidence in who He is.
"I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just."
— Deuteronomy 32:3–4
God is not just mighty in power—He is also perfectly just, holy, and loving. Unlike human systems or personal strength, His nature never changes.
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."
— Hebrews 13:8
To live in the strong tower is to anchor our lives in the immovable character of God.
2. The Act of Running: Our Response in Faith
Proverbs 18:10 says “the righteous run into it.” This suggests urgency, dependence, and trust. It’s a picture of someone fleeing danger and finding immediate refuge—not hesitating or doubting.
"The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you."
— Psalm 9:9–10
Running to the strong tower is not a one-time decision—it’s a daily, even moment-by-moment, surrender of our own control in favor of God’s wisdom and care.
Practical application:
In fear: run to His peace (Philippians 4:6–7)
In confusion: run to His wisdom (James 1:5)
In temptation: run to His holiness (1 Corinthians 10:13)
In failure: run to His mercy (Lamentations 3:22–23)
3. Living, Not Just Visiting
The verse says the righteous “run into” the tower. But many people only visit God in crisis, treating Him as a shelter for storms, not a home for life. God desires for us to abide in Him, not just turn to Him occasionally.
"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty."
— Psalm 91:1
To dwell means to live there—to set up camp, to build your life around God’s presence. When you live in the strong tower:
You experience peace amid panic
You hear truth amid lies
You walk in purpose amid chaos
Jesus affirmed this in John 15:
"Abide in me, and I in you... apart from me you can do nothing."
— John 15:4–5
Living in the strong tower is about ongoing communion with God through prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience.
4. The Safety Found Within
The promise of Proverbs 18:10 is that those who run into the strong tower are “safe.” This doesn’t mean trouble won’t come—but it means trouble won’t defeat you.
"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken..."
— Isaiah 54:10
God’s protection is not always from the storm but in the storm.
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you..."
— Isaiah 43:2
This is the kind of safety the world cannot offer—a soul anchored in God's promises, come what may.
5. Trusting in the Right Source
Many people put their trust in money, influence, human relationships, or intellect. But these can all fail. Only God offers eternal, unshakable security.
"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God."
— Psalm 20:7
Living in the strong tower is a declaration that God is enough. It’s letting go of other dependencies and saying, “Lord, You are my portion.”
Conclusion: Living from a Place of Peace
The strong tower is not just a concept—it’s a lifestyle. It’s a mindset of faith over fear, trust over anxiety, and dwelling over drifting.
"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."
— Isaiah 26:3
If you’re weary, afraid, uncertain, or overwhelmed—run to the strong tower. Live there. Abide there. Trust there.
"The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe."
— Proverbs 18:10

This article makes an interesting point about God being a strong tower. It got me thinking about how in life, we all face different kinds of "storms." Just like people in ancient times ran to physical towers for safety, we should run to God in tough situations. I wonder how we can be more intentional about running to His peace, wisdom, holiness, and mercy in our daily lives. It seems like it takes practice to make that our first response instead of trying to handle things on our own.
