Latimer Heights Specialist Internship

The most fun way I learned coding

By Nathan CabreraPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

I first off want to say thank you to Latimer Heights for giving me the chance to get this internship. This was one of the most fun experiences that I've had with an internship. The supervisor that I and other interns had (Karioki Crosby) was the best, any question that we had he would help us out with it until we all were better at what we were doing and then interns were helping out other interns. Our supervisor gave us many resources to help us learn when we had to go and do projects by ourselves.

There were two main programming languages that we had to learn and use which were Python and JavaScript. We learned mostly in Python, we learned many different types of data types that make up basic websites. These data types that make up the websites are booleans, strings, floats, none, integers, and much more. When you use any of these things you ultimately end up making a line of code. While you are writing all of these different types of data we call it syntax. When you make any errors you would call that a syntax error, that’s one of the things that we were taught while in the program. We learned what debugging is and that was probably one of the more difficult things we had to learn for me. Another thing that we learned was the different things that we can put in our lines of code. Some of the things that we learned that we could do are, modification, print, or looped. There are many different things you can do with printing, you can make a list or a dictionary, and with those two you can print one or all of the list or dictionary.

While in the program we had many projects that helped us refine the skills that we learned. One of the projects that shows what we learned is a movie ticket project. It would prompt the user for their age and other information to calculate the movie ticket price. In my project, it asks for a drink, some popcorn, butter for the popcorn, and a movie theater where there are no babies allowed. I didn’t have a loop or anything in mine but what I did see from others was that they looped it to ask “do you want anything else?” and if they said yes it would ask the questions again for all the snacks and stuff. We learned how to code on two websites, repl.it and p5.js.

My experience with this internship was so amazing and I’m so glad that I was able to learn so much. I was so good to learn a new skill that I’ll hopefully keep using along my way in life. The one thing that I will use to the max is probably debugging because that will help in other life situations, assess the situation, find the problem, fix it and repeat till the situation is solved or switched. Thank you Latimer Heights for giving me this chance and experience!
