Youth Development
Almost two decades ago I started working in the youth development field as a counselor during the summer. I worked with school aged youth in Caton Park. I never knew it would become a career I was passionate about. Growing up in a house full of kids and being the older one, I had to assume responsibility over my younger family members. Because of my upbringing, being in this field felt right. As I progressed I began to love it more and more. However, the more passionate I became the more obstacles I faced. It became painfully obvious, after a few years of working in this field, that it was business as usual. Numbers to show funders were more important than the efficiency of the work being done. The politics of business had invaded a field founded on empathy and advocacy.

My Library Doesn't Support Indie Authors
I remember going to the library at least once every week when I was younger. I would walk out with an armful of books. I participated in every summer reading program, and the librarian knew me by name. I devoured Goosebumps, The Babysitter's Club, and the Sweet Valley Twins before growing too old for them, and moving on to other works of fiction. I stopped going to the library as much when I moved, but the library still shaped me into the book lover that I am today. When I started to take writing seriously, I knew I wanted my books in the library. I would picture myself going to the library for events and book signings. I saw pictures of other authors in their libraries, smiling and holding their books. I pictured myself doing the same, beaming from ear to ear while meeting new readers. I was under the impression that the library would be supportive of indie authors, so I googled my local library and noticed a lack of author events. I thought that was strange, but decided to reach out to the library. I was shocked to find that while some libraries are supportive of self published authors, the one nearest to me is not.

Once upon a time in America, business was sealed with a handshake the deal was closed. Later on came contracts, lawyers plus litigation, witnesses for a plethora of other issues concerning businesses. The main files of businesses used to be typed by a secretary and filed alphabetically and these were the business owner's official records. The times have changed and businesses cannot conduct themselves as though the old paradigm exist today. The technology has advanced from saving files to a three and a half floppy disk or saving to an external drive for backup. Forget soldiers, tanks, ships, airplanes, and battalions but by proxy cyber attacks on businesses, governments, and individuals. Recently in this past decade we have seen the rise of identity theft. State governments and hospitals have been blackmailed or extorted by cyber attackers who want money before the release of the companies computers. There are a number of large and small businesses who have not taken seriously enough the need for network security to be the latest in technology to thwart these kinds of problems. The number one threat to America's prosperity is compromised security throughout the main branches of government and financial institutions. The new normal will be faceless virtual cyberterrorist and the counter-attack will be cybersecurity experts tracking and neutralizing the threats.
