Jobless, on-line sell naked pictures but still working
During the pandemic, OnlyFans, a social media site that enables people to sell explicit images of themselves, has boomed. But site rivalry means that many won't gain a lot.

During the pandemic, OnlyFans, established in 2016 and based in Britain, has boomed in popularity. It had more than 90 million users and over 1 million content creators as of December, up from 120,000 in 2019. For this post, the company declined to comment.
With millions of Americans unemployed, in an effort to provide for themselves and their families, those like Benavidez and Eixenberger are turning to OnlyFans. The pandemic has afflicted women and mothers with an especially devastating toll, wiping out areas of the economy where women dominate: retail firms, restaurants and health care.
A lot of people, out of desperation, are switching to OnlyFans," said Angela Jones, an associate professor of sociology at Farmingdale State University of New York." "These are people who are worried about eating, worried about keeping the lights on, worried that they will not be evicted."
But there are thousands more for every person like Benavidez who can use OnlyFans as their primary source of income, like Eixenberger, who hopes for a windfall and ends up with just over a few hundred dollars and worries that the images will impede their ability to get a job in the future.
"It's an incredibly saturated market already," Jones said of explicit online content. "It's really misguided to think people are just going to open an OnlyFans account and start raking in the dough."

Models, porn stars and actors who already have large social media followers are also the most popular content creators. To push followers to their OnlyFans pages, they can use their other online sites, where they sell exclusive content to those willing to pay a monthly fee, and customized content in return for tips.
A 20% break of every pay is taken by OnlyFans. Via mobile payment applications, which are not subject to the cut, some creators collect tips; Benavidez earns most of her money this way.
But many of the developers who have entered the site out of desperate financial need do not have significant follow-ups on social media or other way to drum up steady business.
In July, Elle Morocco of West Palm Beach, Florida, was laid off as an office manager from her work. Her unemployment benefits don't cover her monthly rent of $1,600, utility expenses and food costs, so in November she joined OnlyFans.
But when she entered the website, Morocco, 36, had no social media presence to talk about, and had to gain subscribers one by one by sharing images of herself on Instagram and Twitter, and following up with individuals who like and comment on her stories, urging everyone to subscribe to OnlyFans. It's more complex and time-consuming than she planned, and less rewarding financially.
"It's a full-time job looking for work on top of your full-time job," she said. "Fans would like to see you posting every day. Still, you are churning. You still take photos to share.
So far, she has made just $250 on the website, despite spending upwards of eight hours a day making, uploading and promoting her content often.
She said, "If you're looking for 9 to 5, they might not hire you if they find out you've got OnlyFans." "When they know that you're a sex worker, they may not want you."
Digital sex work can offer the illusion of protection and privacy; without having to communicate with consumers in person, content creators can get paid. But that doesn't mean the threats aren't there.
Barb Brents, a professor of sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said, "Online sex work is a much more appealing alternative to many people than going on the streets or selling direct sexual services." "Having said that, anyone who gets into this type of job needs to be aware that there are dangers."
"This is the first year that I didn't have to choose between my children's electricity bill and Christmas presents," she said. "This is the first year I have been able to do all of this on my own."
