Microsoft Dynamics AX now known as Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations has been rebranded, on-premises. First released in 2002, Microsoft Dynamics AX is one of the various ERP solutions in the intelligent Microsoft Dynamics suite. Primarily suitable for mid-sized to large-sized business organizations. Microsoft Dynamics AX/Finance and Operations automates the various financial related business operations and also plays an important role in managing various business operations like manufacturing, supply-chain, distribution, HR and some more.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations is Microsoft's enterprise-scale ERP that's suitable for mid-sized and large organizations. The product is now two separate applications - Dynamics 365 Finance, and Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management.

Microsoft D365 Finance enables you to automate and modernize your global financial operations. It enables monitoring performance in real-time and predicting future outcomes. The D365 Supply Chain Management enables you to manage your global operations, supply chain and manufacturing. It gives you the ability to integrate IoT, mixed reality and AI.

In general, the difference between Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations and Microsoft Dynamics AX are much more significant than just a name change. Though it offers much of the same functionalities, Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations have some extended advantages attached to it.
