I Get Lost In My Writing
The Key Is To Enjoy The Process Of Story Telling.
I really love being a writer. I write many stories, and I love writing fiction whether for children or adults. I have something to offer everyone because I write well... just about everything!
I do sometimes get lost in my stories. I have plenty of series's to work on here on Vocal.
I don't let it bother me, I just work on them bit by bit.
Writing is more fun when you enjoy the process.
I love playing with fiction, so when I get an idea in my head, I jot it down so that I can work with it later. It could be short, like a sentence or two. This is the point because a sentence or two can lead to a story if you just go with it.
I read plenty too. I read fiction, non-fiction, plays, poetry, scripts, newspaper articles, and journals.
I read just about anything that takes my fancy.
Reading isn't just a hobby of mine, it also gives me ideas that I can work with, and that makes the process of writing more enjoyable. I learn from other writers of all kinds.
I find what stories make me click, and that often motivates me to write my own. It is also important because reading gives me an idea of what I love writing about.
Hint...
It was reading that made me become aware of the fact that I'm not a niche person. I am a person who loves all kinds of stories.
Enjoying the process of reading leads to the joy of enjoying the process of storytelling, at least it does for me.
It creates curiosity, and mine started with wondering how these fantastic stories were put together.
The same thing happens when I read poetry or scripts. I will sit there and analyse them for hours, and work out how they have been put together, what the plots and themes are, and even how they would work on stage or in film.
Once I have gone through this process, I often sit and try to create my own.
The above isn't the only way in which I enjoy the process of storytelling. Sometimes an object such as a blue hat can trigger the process, especially when I imagine who might wear such a hat!
I start with one sentence that might look like this...
The lady in the blue hat was a mystery to me...
I will then continue that sentence and play with it until I have a story, not worrying about any mistakes in my first draft.
I simply enjoy the process of writing and then I will correct any mistakes later.
The process of writing need not be complicated, and you do not need to be grammar perfect to get started.
The key is to enjoy the process of storytelling. Write a sentence and play with it; you will be amazed at how descriptive you can be if you just enjoy what you are doing, without thinking too much.
Thinking too much can lead to overload, and overload can lead to that dreaded blank page. It can make your thoughts foggy because you will be focused on being too perfect instead of actually writing.
I encourage all of you to give it a go.
- Write a sentence about an object, person or something from the top of your head, then add to it as you go along.
- Don't think about being perfect, just get your words on the page.
- What can you see in your mind's eye? Can you imagine what the object might do, or maybe it is a person who has intrigued you?
- Keep the story going, even if it doesn't make sense yet.
- Finally, read it back to yourself and try to piece it together.
- Most importantly, are you enjoying the process?
Happy writing!
