How Wikipedia Earns Money?
How Wikipedia Earns Money

Just like every day, Today also I was using Wikipedia then suddenly my attention was grab on their logo where there was written something on the small red strip after click on it, I got to know that Wikipedia has published over 56 Million Articles. Which is a huge amount of article for one website . I think because of this the website has become one of the Top 10 most popular website in the world , then again one thought come to my mind due to this that "How Does Wikipedia Earn Money?"
Because if you look at there website you cannot find any types of advertisement or sponsorship post , from where do there domain renewal, office and employee expenses money come from as it will cost more than millions of money for there web hosting expenses.
After my research on this topic, I got to know some ways from which Wikipedia generates income which I will be discussing in this article one by one. So let's get started :
(1) Donation
According to 2018 and 2019 financial report , Wikipedia got more than $120 million dollars from donation which is the main source of earning of Wikipedia . You will not believe that Google is the frequent Donor of Wikipedia . In 2019 Google has donated around $3 Millon.
There are many more companies which also gives a yearly donation to Wikipedia like Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Craigslist Foundation, etc.
(2) Wikipedia Store
Wikipedia second source of earning is there own merch store where they sell their own merchandise like T-shirts, Mugs, and Notebooks from which they able to earn a little amount of money but it is not that much as compare to there donation income.
If you want you can directly donate to Wikipedia or you can buy their merchandise to support them .
(3) Investment
Very few people know about the third way of Wikipedia earning which is Investment. Wikipedia invests in both Short term and Long Term. From where they were able to get fixed Dividend, Profit, and many time interest.
An investment like Fixed Deposit, Mutual Fund, Stock Market, or Corporate Bonds. If you focus on their financial report , you will see that from investment Wikipedia got around 64,587,832 Dollar of Profits.
(4) Foreign Currency Gain
Well everybody knows what is foreign currency gain because the whole Forex trading industry is dependent on this . For those who Don't know let me explain to you with this little example : Suppose that you earn any amount of money from foreign currency from freelancing sites like Fiverr, Upwork or any other way where payment is always provided in Dollars or any other currency and in India or any country, the currency rate fluctuate daily
Suppose if the Dollar rate in India is 69 then it can be possible to change into 71 on later day onward . If the exchange rate is more than yesterday and you convert the money, Then you are in profit.
But if the Currency exchange rate is less than yesterday and you convert it., then you are in loss. Many People wait for the currency rate to go up if it less then yesterday or preferred rate and then convert it , which is a very smart way to earn extra income
This same Technique Wikipedia uses to make there fourth source of earning. From Foreign currency gain, Wikipedia has earn income of around $30,311 (Thirteen Thousand Three hundred and Eleven) according to their financial year 2018 - 2019.
So these were all the four ways Wikipedia uses to earn money and sustain their site . If you know any other way from which Wikipedia make money then do let me know in the comment section.
