How to Share Stories and Spread Ideas

Learning how to publish a book might be just as tough for first-time authors as producing the book itself.

Traditional Publishing vs. Self-Publishing

New writers who want to publish their first novel, fictional book, or academic book have two publishing options. One is to sign a book contract with a traditional publisher. Such an agreement, usually carried out by a copyright agent, gives the publisher special rights to print and distribute the book. The author collaborates with the publishing house's editor to generate a set number of books. Whether the book finally sees the light or not depends on the decision of the publishing company.

Many debut writers, on the other hand, prove their abilities in the field of self-publishing. Self-published writers eschew the publishing house and publish their novels around the world on their own. They do this by making the book available for printing if needed, such as an eBook, as an audio book, or by printing and selling copies of the book themselves.

Methods for Self-Publishing a Novel

Indie authors now have more options than ever to get their work in front of readers:

  • Via print-on-demand: This is probably the lowest-risk printing method in the world of book publishing, where copies of a book are printed only if someone places an order. Early writers often get registered with publishing houses like Pragati Prakashan to print their books.
  • As an eBook: Downloading digital copies of a book on demand is simple because it eliminates the need for paper and printing equipment. Ebooks eLibrary is one of the leading publishers of ebooks. They publish ebooks, and their publishing process is author-friendly.
  • Self-publishing: You can print a book for yourself before it is released in the hopes that it will sell later. This is sometimes called "vain publishing." As your book progresses, you will happily sell your self-published copies. If it doesn't reach the intended audience, you can end up with heaps of spider web in your house.
  • As an audiobook: Modern audiences often use books as audiobooks. Like printed novels, audio books can be produced by a traditional publisher or by the author himself. You'll need a narrator in any case, who may be asked to record hours of prose narration.
  • How the Traditional Publishing Process Works

The usual publishing houses produce a large number of copies that are read widely. Every book or novel you see on the best-selling list was published by a traditional publisher.

As a debut writer, you don't have to be a best-selling novelist like Dan Brown or David Baldacci to get a publishing party. Authors who sell a modest quantity of books can still work with prominent publishers and sell their hard copies and ebooks.

The traditional publishing process takes time and patience to get the title published and includes processes like proofreading, editing, designing, printing, marketing, and distribution.

Steps for Getting Your Book Published

Well-known authors will often be offered a multimillion-dollar publishing contract, providing them with a home for work that is not yet available. Unsolicited manuscripts can also find their way to the publishers, as long as the authors follow the appropriate steps. Here are some tips to get your book published in traditional ways. Note that these are not typing tips; they particularly affect the publishing process.

  • Edit and proofread: One or two errors will not overwhelm your work, but their prevalence will make you look useless. Remember that you can only get one chance with a publisher or study agent; make sure they see the best job you can offer.
  • Identify a target audience for your book: The authors' market for publishing houses is determined by the market for their books—potential viewers who may be interested in their books. In the publishing industry, some types are more attractive than others. In the world of literary fiction, these include children's books, adult novels, science fiction, fairy tales, comedy, and romance novels. A good book can be written in any genre, but these are the genres with the most reliable audience.
  • Identify potential agents: Although having an agent does not guarantee that your book will find a publisher, it is very helpful. Many agencies and agencies have websites that say what they like, as well as ways to ask questions.
  • Submit your book proposal: Most printers do not want you to send the whole novel as part of a cold call. Here are some of the things they might want: a question book, a 1-2 page caption for the entire novel, and a sample of 1–5 chapters. These combined elements form the basis of your book.
  • Submit directly to a publisher: If you do not have an agent, you can sometimes send it directly to the publisher, just knowing that your chances of receiving it are very slim. In most cases, however, publishers will only consider a novel submitted by a reputable literary agent. The exception to this rule is if you are posting a niche novel to a niche publishing house or if you have personal contact with the editor who would agree to read it because of that relationship.
